There is way shittier things happening with the American government to even care about a punk band in Russia, why is this even being talked about? I bet that no less than 90% of Americans can't even tell you who the president is over there.
There is a President (Putin) and a Prime Minister (Medvedev). Not so unusual globally. RE: Pussy Riot. Go Girls. This is what Punk's about. IE : drawing attention to injustice.
Ahh, I was under the impression that putin was prime minister.... my bad. He has been, at least, right?
yeh, he was, and Medvedev was President for a while too. Very cosy setup supported by the Russian Church which was why Pussy Riot were performing an anti-Putin song in the Moscow Cathedral.
I was speaking to a Russian the other day who said the protest is as much about the Russian Orthodox Church as is is about Putin. She said there is little seperation between church & state and that The Patriarch is corrupt and flaunts his earthly posessions. She said that she would hope that the church would speak up against repressive actions of the state, but that they are too cozy.
I guess because there are things that happen outside of America. protests-in-moscow-as-putin-and-medvedev-swap-jobs The cynic in me thinks it's only big news because they are 3-4 pretty women...but I'm sure it's not.
