Should I even bother with sunscreen or just burn a few times and get a tan and let that be my protection? A tan is protection from sunburns and thats what causes basal-cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma...according to Wikipedia lol.

I have an amazing sunburn right now and i'm wondering if its a bad idea to skip on the sunscreen lol:eek: I'm thinking that most of you have A LOT of experience with sunburns and what not. Any of you have some thoughts or tips you can give me? How do you all handle it most of the time?

sunscreen does just that: it screens the sun, not stops it. in other words, you'll get tanned rather than burned. you won't be at immediate risk for cancer, and tans actually tan slightly better than burns anyway, so you're better off for the future also.

and yes, i recognize the epic necropost quality of this thread.

if you go out in the sun, you are at risk for melanoma...sunscreen or not.

    Most sunscreens don't even work.

And I also noticed the unbelievably necroness of this post, but I had to make that point since I had a lot of cancerous skin cells a few years back and now seem to be the "skin cancer queen"

Suncream every time. Sunburn is not pleasant.

Sunburn is not a fun and nothing to strive for. With the help of sun cream and / or managing the exposing time, you should try to get conditioned to the sun without getting burned. I don't know how it works for others, but i feel if it's enough. It's also helpful to start eearly in the year when the sun is not so powerful as in full summer.

Anyway, as others told, any sun tanning increases the risk of skin cancer. That's just a fact. So you need to decide. For my part, i do enjoy getting a nice all over tan, but not by overdone sun exposure.

Sunscreen is bad and actually causes cancer because it blocks your skin's ability to produce vitamin D (which helps prevent cancer) when exposed to the sun. I say that sunscreen is garbage and that limiting one's exposure to the sun (if possible) is the best way of preventing sunburn. But your skin NEEDS the sun, it just doesn't need to be baked. Sunburn isn't good, but neither is something that prevents your body from naturally producing something it needs.

Watch out! its really easy to get a sunburn on the usually hidden parts of the body (especially buttocks)!

temper your skin to the sun with a sunbed , tanning bed.. and your skin will be more resistant to burns.. however its not safer if you dont know how to use it..

Thats weird because sunburn down there is possible, maybe the penis has more
melanin or something or maybe standing or sitting down but not laying on the back makes it harder for the sun to reach there

I do not use suncreams and avoid being sunburnt by normally working outside. The trick to avoiding burning the parts of your body often clothed when you are naked is gradual exposure and regular exposure at the start of spring. One other aspect that should be taken account of is that certain groups have less of a tolerance to the sun, particularly those with celtic ancestry.

That's what I've been doing but not for the sake of tanning but the benefits of vitamin D and I prefer not to use sunscreen as its toxic and laborious to put on and the little guy doesn't seem to mind brief sunning

Your "naughty bits" would be the first to grow a melanoma if you don't provide protection because of the sensitive nature of the skin. I have seen in others a melanoma on the scrotum and penis, only one of which was curable, the rest resulted in palliative care over a 3 year period after the melanoma metastasised (spread internally through bloodstream).

Tanning is no protection from skin cancer. It actually increases the risk over time, about four- to five-fold in naturally fair-skinned people.

If you think slapping on sunscreen is toxic, wait til a dermatologist points out a squamous cell carninoma or melanoma. That will instantly redefine what "toxic" means!

I do not sun my bits in the heat of summer; I go to the beach after sunset if it is still hot, or very early in the morning. All other times I'm safe inside, or out in the backyard in the shade.

There's nothing healthy about a tan. Tanning is skin cells in trauma that want to become melanoma =O

I'm just remembering that from an ad.

I actually got a little sunburn the other day, reflection off the snow =[
I say use sun screen. You don't want to be an old weathered lookin person when you're older and it's protection from UV rays. It's a pain and it always gets in my eyes and mouth and its like a sweat blanket on me but its protection. The sun isn't all that good.

I don't try to tan as I know its not good but vitamin D is essential for ones well being and you can't make much of it during the early or late hours of the day. Vitamin D production is related to UVB intensity so one could go out say around 10 am in summer for bout 15 mins for the benefits but avoid the midday sun. I've read various articles that vitamin D has a protective effect against melanoma and wards it of. Moderation is key and I'm sure the naughty bits will be fine in shade while the rest of you gets the suns ray for vitamin D.

Vitamin D affords no protection if you are prediposed by skin type (fair, freckled, moles) to cutaneous cancer in any of its forms. Vit. D of 0.25mcg can be taken as a supplement and provides a hedge against osteoporosis in later life. Once a seemingly innocuous skin cancer goes undetected, the problem dermatologists see in Australia is that when people come in with an itchy mole, they are shocked to learn it is a melanoma. By that time it is too late to excise it. It really is frightening stuff. I've had two ESMs removed from back 3 years ago (just excision with local anaesthetic) plus margin (to ensure it is all out). Unfortunately my beach shelter has been shredded when I washed it in the backyard only to see if fly onto the neighbour's barbed wire fence! Derrrr—!

Fair, freckled and mole sounds like skin type 1 I suspect I'm a 3 and yeah I'm half dutch because of my father and you remind me of the time how he baked himself in the sun in baby oil in just speedos and sunnies laying on the deck chair. I've had my skin checked and the doctor isn't to concerned about what he sees and anything I have taken out is a false alarm :). You're pretty wise BTW. Yeah and I eat well and to a degree antioxidants protect the skin but not when they're over whelmed so I bear that in mind.

Sunscreen is toxic when vitamin A is added. So just check the ingredients in sunscreen and spend a little more money to buy a more natural brand.

Your body does need vitamin d and I don't really agree with slathering yourself with sunscreen every time you walk out the door but if you'll be outside for longer than a half hour, especially around water or at the beach and especially when you're fair skinned or prone to moles then it's a really good idea to to put on sunscreen.

I've heard coconut oil makes a great natural sunscreen.

I've read something about vitamin A being toxic in sunscreen, coconut oil also is used as a tanning lotion not that I'm going to try it though as its not necessary. Sunscreen every time you go out the door is no good as that will lead to vitamin D deficiency.
