Okay so I've thought long and hard!! Came to the conclusion that I want dreads and I'm SUPER excited!!:) I've done SO much research and I know its a big change! I just have to prepare myself to deal with any criticism or problems I might encounter on my dreads journey!! I usually don't care what people think but I asked someone for their opinion yesterday but it feels as if he only put me down. I am white with dirty long blonde hair and I'm tall too. I think dreads would be nice on me. My mom agrees:) but I live in the south so its not common especially in MS to see dreads on white people. Much less girls. I like to stand out though. I always have. :) I guess what I am getting to is I need a little more support. If anyone has comments, support, tips, or anything I just need to know that I might not know then throw it my way:)
    thanks!!!

I didn't get them done last night but I'm going today to see a professional to do it. She has done IT before so its better that I waited and do it the better way. I'm so anxious though!! Some people freak out on me and say don't ruin your hair but I want these dreads so bad!!!:) I'm a dreadhead already Haha plus my hair agrees... ever since I decided I wanted dreads, my hair has been in knots and crazy messy Haha its like my hair knows its about to get dreaded and it can't wait either!!!:) super excited! I got beads picked out already too:) ugh I hate anticipation!! Anyways ill update again later today!

    A "professional"?

Seriously, lurk more and do some more reading. Look at more pictures, etc.

Hey! I'm a white girl from MS with dreads. Had them almost 6 months! Don't sweat it. Some people stare, but most people who have the respect to say something, love them. It doesn't matter what anyone thinks but you anyways.
    Good luck!

Professional meaning I tried, and at this point all that remains that anyone may do is to sit back and laugh at and/or ridicule you.

    No offense.

Also, a lack of patience will NOT work out, with regards to locks.

Also number 2, even if you wanted to "make" locks, you could buy 4x the amount of pot it should take to do so, with 85 fucking dollars-and still save yourself a lot of trouble later, cause you're going to have to boil, cut, comb, or do something to deal with the nasty candles you're going to have on your head.

getting them "made" (especially with wax! no!) is not a good idea
the best way is all natural neglect, or if you do want to actually put them in use the twist and rip method

I'm not claiming to know much about dreads, as I've never had them, but my friend went to a hairdresser that used wax and it was a real mess. Couldn't get all the wax out, and dirt and filth started getting caught in it. Eventually had to cut his dreads off and start over. I suggest you get the opinions of people who have dreadlocks and plan some more before you jump into it, and good luck :)

I'm not sure what you're talking about with the pot but I'm not using wax on my head. The lady doing it is going to backcomb my hair. And I'm sure of my decision to do so. I hate when people tell me anything negative about it... I reaaaaaallllly want them so if its a bad choice its on me and ill deal with it but for now, I wanna be a dreadhead. :)

i dislike when people come onto this website and say what they are going to do - that they know aaaallll about it, and then when regular posters here give some foresight or tell them to read more, they take it as an insult. almost ALL of these noobs will cry about us being negative and not supporting their way of life, or compromising an otherwise happy thread - blah blah blah.

NO! Just listen to the regulars, and DO THE RESEARCH YOURSELF.
As RooRshack said - not being able to wait to get dreadlocks = failure.

Weaver, I don't mean to be 'negative' or a 'hater', but maybe you should do some more research. What about the meaning behind dreadlocks? You realize not only ignorant conservatives are going to give you bad rap, but also some very eccentric people too, because of what dreadlocks have come to represent. For some people it is waaaay more than a hairstyle (I don't necessarily agree with them on this) - but the point is you will get asked a whole lot of questions, might as well be prepared for it.

If you'd REALLY done actual research you would have seen a website like dreadlockssite. That is your best source of information about dreads around ~ with real advice from people who have dreads.

And personally, paying someone 80 dollars to backcomb your hair and make perfect dreads defeats the purpose of them entirely. Blah.

I understand and consider everything posted! Thanks guys for commenting!! I have a few days til I get them in so ill do more research as it was suggested many times. I know ill get a rap or stereotype label from some people but as long as I feel as confident about getting them in a few days like I do now then I'm sure ill get them. And as far as people posting negative things, I wasn't whining. Or mad. I will be honest and say I don't like seeing the negative posts but I appreciate people responding to my thread and telling me exactly how they feel bout it. I just can't take it to heart because I know everyone has their own opinions. So once again, everyone thank YOU for the advice!!:) ill do MORE research too and post again to update.

If you want to backcomb or twist + rip them, just do it yourself, or get a friend to help. Chances are your hairdresser knows about as much about locks as you do, so you might as well just save yourself some money. Either of these methods won't give you "perfect" dreads anyway, it'll just help your hair on its way.

What you need, is to stay away from conditioners and to keep your hair clean with something that works for you. Other than that you need time, patience, hair length, and to be able to resist fiddling with them while they mature. That's it.
