First off, R.I.P. my little buddy 'Damon'

I refilled his water bowl yesterday to the normal amount. He went over and layed in it with his head sticking out, which is unusual behavior for him. He has never gotten into the bowl. I figured as long as his head was out it'd be fine. He then got back out and slithered around the tank a few times. I went to bed, and when I woke up he was back in the bowl. This time completely under the water. I lifted him up and there was no resistance. I brought his body to my vets office because my dogs would just dig it up if I buried him on our property. I've never heard of this happening. There's only one thing I found online about snakes with mites; that they go into the water to drown the mites. But I didn't see any mites in the water afterwards. He was a very young snake. A ball python & only 1 1/2 ft long. This is still a mystery...

    Sorry for your loss.

Ive heard they lay in the bowl sometimes when the temperature is too dramatic, usually hot. Maybe something that regulates the cage temp or a close source of light had issues.

    Thank you.
That may have been it. I'll never be sure. The humidity might have been too high. It's been hot and humid outside and I live on the second floor, so its worse.

I was just about to say the lil guy just couldn't take the heat. When I read he was in his bowl knew straight away plus knowing the heatwave going on over there.

I'm sorry for your loss :(

Aww dude I'm sorry. I had three iguanas at one time. All grew to like a foot long. The one actually drowned in the water bowl, shortly after, one like burned to a crisp too close to his light, and the third one lived about a year longer until he mysteriously died. So I know what it means to lose a pet and I send my vibes to you brother :)

Agreed, sounds like things got to hot for him. I lost a pet snake a few years ago because of temperature problems, too. Sorry to hear it, they are such cool creatures.

Sorry for your loss! My ball python Jeff died unexpectedly too, at only 5 months old! He had a (unnoticed) respiratory infection which stopped him eating :(
