So, I read some good advice on hiking in the nude. Basically it suggested go in clothed, hike a mile or two, get a feel for the trail (in other words self judge if the trail has been busy or not) before taking off clothes and continuing the hike. What other types of advice could we put together for those who want to do some private solo exploration of nudism. Maybe advice for someone looking to go camping nude and how best to judge if a site will be a little more accepting of nudism. Or, for those who want to get a group of nudists together for a BBQ or picnic and some fun in the sun, what advice could we provide in deciding a location? I have read a lot of advice on suggesting to nudists-curious in visiting an already established location such as a beach or club. I know some of this will probably be common sense and will be vary depending on nudism laws with in the state or country. What would you like to suggest?
A local guy tried that and spent time in jail. I talked with him. He's a nice guy who the feds wanted to make a public example of. Our local national forest bans nudity. There is no nationwide law against it, but look, if people complain, the rangers, in their efforts to resolve disputes among visitors will detain you, certainly tell you to get dressed, possibly charge you with disturbing the peace, etc. In parts of the United States (maybe where you are?), people are less likely to report you, more likely to accept back country nudity. Rangers rarely act unless there is a complaint. In the national forests nearest my home, my nudity is strictly off-trail. There I have the presumption of privacy and it would be a lot harder for them to press charges. To be specific, I will hike in clothed and sometimes be nude at an off-trail campsite, definitely bathe nude in lakes, rivers and remote beaches. A mixed gender group will cause less commotion than a solo male hiker. People figure that a happy group of naked guys and girls may be a little wild, but probably not some naked rapist trail stalker. Some friends of mine paddled nude down one of our mountain rivers and someone saw them and called the rangers from her cell phone to complain. But my friends knew what was up and were dressed by the time he arrived. Now they say that they never let other canoes paddle ahead of them. You are still vulnerable to people calling from the river bank, so keep your clothes handy. A woman at my local tech school told me that she went nude camping with her friends on one of our coastal islands. Their nudity waited until they were in camp, no hassles resulted. Unless there are county ordinances, there are no laws against nudity on national seashores, even so in areas that restrict nudity, kids can be nude until around age 10 in a lot of beaches. Most people don't provide their kids that freedom, but if a couple of nudist families hit a secluded textile beach, turned their kids loose naked (but keeping an eye on them), then maybe nudity for kids would eventually catch on in some areas.
It does pay to know and understand the nudism laws in your state. Which is excellent advice for everyone. Just knowing what the laws are though, isn't always enough. For example: In recent news Moira Johnston was arrested for going topless in the city of New York. It is "legal" in the city of New York for women to be topless. She was arrested by a police officer who was not familiar with the law and because people were complaining. Which is another potential problem that you brought up. It may be "legal" to be nude in certain area, but if enough people complain then you can be arrested for disturbing the peace. Of course there is also one larger piece of advice in your words of wisdom and that is, it is generally not a good idea to go around doing anything nude alone. More people seem to be accepting of large groups participating in something like hiking in the nude if there is a group of people doing it. More proof that there is power in numbers. Still I suppose if you "had to go solo" keep your clothes at the ready and keep your sense alert.
The best is just to get naked from the word go.Thats the best....i Have hiked a few times, and start of in the nude, and usually, when you do run into somebody else...they are rather receptive and non judgmental, and accept you as you are. I once went on a day long naked hike, and ran into a bunch of police platoons doing a route march,IN A TEXTILE AREA,and I had stacked my clothes way back in my car,and only had my cap and water...and the path was narrow, which meant I had to go right through the middle of the platoons....they just laughed, and some jeered at me...others expressed the desire also to be naked...seeing that they were in full kit...and I was naked...it was real fun!
It all depends on location and local custom as well as your own comfort level. As long it's in a location where nudity is not totally unexpected and you have no worries about being seen then go for it. Nude hiking on a warm day sunny day is a great sensation and it is not always feasible to do a quick cover up if you meet someone. Along a beach where nudity is common you would be OK no matter who you met. On a quiet mountain trail my suggestion is as well as your back pack to have a bum-bag which can be hung to cover your bits quickly or all the time. The laws themselves are usually well defined but local understanding and reactions are much less predictable so there will always be an element of risk.
I am not aware of any statute at law that specifically deals with, mentions and/or bans nudity. It could I suppose come under the definition of "lewd behaviour" or "public nuisance", maybe even "offensive behaviour" (in an Australian context) but laws are far from uniform or clear cut from one country to the next. It is of interest to me how nude hiking in a national park or forest could effectively be enforced. You definitely have to have the lifestyle of naturism running through the veins. One or two nude walks might be considered 'daring' and 'out there', but does not necessarily define being a naturist. Go nude all the time at home, in the garden, driving, to the (nude) beach... covering up minimally as necessary, but go nude as much as you possibly can. Solo nude overnight walks are a great pleasure and liberating experience but finding your own place to strip off is increasingly difficult in this world. An isolated forest that you know well is ideal (I know parts of a National Park rainforest so well that I can confidently assess when and if I will encounter people but after years doing it, only once have I been "sprung" walking nude, and those people were actually breaking the law by riding bikes on walking trails!). Maybe the American Association for Nude Recreation has a list of places to go walking nude. Or Google locally.
Being naked has my senses on high alert . And there are laws in some states that say that being nude is legal as long as no one objects/complains to you being nude. And exhibitionism is illegal in all states, but nudity is not , it all depends on who sees and interprets your intentions.
