I like to lay on my back with feet up and just have my right hand reach over and do it. Not really awkward. You could also go on your side and do it which i hear is easier but i dont do it. It's just good to know what your working with before you put foreign objects in there

honestly i'd reccomend fingers, it's weird at first to position right but it works well enough for most people. (too small for me) lube is always a good idea (even if you're loose enough to not need it, use it. going without can cause microtears and shit)
cover anything you don't want to clean twice with a condom or something (i didn't have any so i used a latex glove [OBVIOUS WARNING: if you're allergic to Latex, DO NOT use a latex glove]) clean EVERYTHING beforehand (condoms are sterile so you don't need to worry about that, cleaning it would just wash away the lube [if pre-lubed] anyway) if you own a douche, i'd recomend using it. and you'll and you'll want to clean everything afterwards to (or just dispose of the condom)

as for items, i've only ever used my fingers, dildos, and the real thing. (i didn't need any training, chances are this WILL NOT be the case for you) if you don't want to use fingers i'd reccomend buying ACTUAL toys, small dildos, small butplugs, anal beads, et cetera. if you MUST imporvise, i heard from a friend of mine that he uses his plunger (i'd hope a smooth plastic handle, wood causes splinters) again, put a condom on it. basically stay away from anything that has an edge, and GO SLOW. don't just ram it up there, and don't try to take too much at once. if you feel pain, STOP and go back a little.
