My son's school has a dress code. Everything he needs is there at a fraction of the price b/c of previous year's students! Also, my kids love all those cartoon/movie shirts (Cars, Superman, Star Wars, etc...) that are so expensive new and easy to find at the thrift store. I agree that Goodwill has gotten greedy, but oh well. Still cheaper than Target or *ugh* the mall.
I LOVE thrift shops - be it goodwill, haven of rest, hospice or anything else I can't think of, especially for their books. Sometimes I will have a "dry spell" when I shop at these places for my books to no avail...but in the end ,I have come out with prizes from these thrift stores. Well worth anybody's time and trouble, if you've gotta shop for something anyway. lol I will admit that I have discovered, as I grew older, that I HATE shopping. Thrift shops can cover a L O T of ground, lol
I also find it fulfilling to take things to the thrift store (as well as shopping there). I was once a totally plastic kind of shopper, and I ended up with way too many clothes that no longer fit. When I give things to the thrift store I feel like I am donating to a charity, in a way. I guess it's all part of the cycle. Flea markets are awesome too. We have this one where you can get LP's really cheap.
I've been pushing my mom to take me to a thrift store! Such great prices! I've really gotten into sewing and i want to buy tons of old clothes for a couple bucks each and sew them into new creations! Fun, creative, cheap, and it's upcycling! :daisy:
Today I got a quality semi formal/formal jacket.... Not a sport coat, but wool felt, made in USA, and the FIRST jacket I've ever had that fits me properly..... I've paid a few bucks for thrift store ones before..... Two label makers, and about ten rolls of label material. And nice ones, US made scotch brand. Use the label, then in the trash they go...... trying not to be a hoarder.... Buncha copper wire. A hair clipper, again made in USA, no attachments but works fine, took it apart and disinfected/cleaned, oiled, gave it away. Probly stuff I forgot. All free. The thrift store lets me go through their trash, and they're very wasteful.
I just bought a pair of blue jeans, in perfect shape, for just under 3$. I had been looking for a pair of jeans for hours, but they were all sparkly, and obscenely expensive, so I decided to go to a thrift store, as I originally planned to... I found the perfect pair in under 3 minutes they fit almost perfectly, which is something, since I rarely find jeans that fit me well. Can't wait to go there again...
We have Goodwill here and about a half hour north is a Salvation Army. Although I do still buy some things new, most of my belongings are second or third hand. When I was younger I described my decorating style as "Early Salvation Army". I guess my style has not changed in the last 40 years. I still have a lot of the same things. I also like yard sales when they are in season. Right now I am trying to sort through stuff and take some things back to Goodwill. I am on a moratorium on bring in anything before stuff goes out. You just can't beat thrift store prices.
totally addicted to thrift shops or as we call them in england charity shops as some or most of the proceeds go to charitable organisations depending on how well run and honorable they are! most of my home and my clothes come from them. :2thumbsup:
Most of my clothes are either from thrift stores (we call them oppertunity "opp" shops here). St Vinnies is a favorite of mine. I also get a lot of "hand-me-up's" from my sister since we're the same size. You just get some great stuff there
Ohio man found Picasso numbered print at a thrift store for $14 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBJQdC7q-f8"]Ohio Man Buys Genuine Signed Picasso Print At Thrift Store for $14 - YouTube Just heard on the news that he sold it for $7000.
I thrift all the time. New mass produced store bought clothes are so sterile and fake to me, the majority of my clothes are second hand or gifts or handmade with love! My latest purchase was a pair of high waisted jeans today, for only 5 dollars!
I was a value village lover for years, but last week I noticed they're pricing shirts at $8.99. And they've been doing a bunch of advertising about how great they are, how much they donate to charities, etc. Then I had their employees put away my cart of treasures while I was trying on some jeans....I think it's time for a new place. I went to goodwill the other day, and their prices are outrageous! $7 for pants is not a bargain anymore. $3 for a book, $5 for a CD....greed greed greed. There's some great thift stores downtown run by the homeless shelters - I believe I'll visit those more often now. That being said, I won't buy anything new anymore. I either buy recycled or make my own - usually with fabric from a thrift store
I'm glad you said that about the Goodwill stores in particular. I have found that they are as high (in price) or HIGHER than some of the stores around here like Dollar General, Family Dollar, and such. Yeah - $1 for a soft back book, $2 for a hardback, $5 a top and $7 for a pair or pants does not a bargain make - ESPECIALLY when they are used fgs! Other thrift stores - such as the Salvation Army, Hospice (which has some really beautiful items), and I can't remember what else now p) will be getting my business from now on.
Goodwill prices went up dramatically in the middle of this current recession. Once they realized that more and more people were coming to their stores because they couldn't afford to buy elsewhere... Dirty pool, that is.
I used to work for a fairly big thrift shop company- many of them have email mailing lists with coupons and will tell you about the sales. That was my job, I wrote the newsletters. Sometimes there's coupons in junk mail too, just this week I got a half-off everything coupon for value world, the value village type place in my area. There's also a website somewhere with a directory of all the charity-run shops, not all of them are. Can't remember the link, but it exists.
That ^ is a good idea. However, in ALL of SC I've never heard of that being done...anywhere in any county.
we have a thirft store near my house called Love Lady Thirt and i love going there. They have soooo many cute clothes! I've gotten some of my favorite t-shirts there. Plus, the money is used to found Breast Cancer research. [or so they say. <_< >_>] so it feels good to help out others while also helping myself.
