If you dig the hole in the ground, you will need less wood, and will have more dirt to work with.

 

Digging into a hillside would be the best option if available.

 

Hillside is what it is - we have flat on top and drops into hollows on every side. sorry just dashing through - got to order medicine parts before ride comes!

 

Hello there, friend (OP)! I am located in northwest Arkansas and would love to come down sometime and learn more about your forest dwelling lifestyle. I'll have to take a (well deserved) break from the daily grind, but I can make it sometime before year's end.

I feel kinda different because we have no real rules or impositions on each other here besides take good care of the nature and feed/love the critters. If you are intelligent, happy, cool, free - it intimidates some of the inbreds and rednecks so we are largely concerned within our own borders and the cool neighbors and friends we have.

 

I am currently, pretty much homeless. I would love to join and am very intrigued by the lifestyle mannerisms. Simondales' low impact houses have always been a dream of mine.
I'm a 20 year old girl, raised in the city....it is not my ideal of living. I'm a freespirit and my family does not seem to accept that, sadly. I am intelligent in my ways, always eager to learn and share, and an archer. Would love to attribute in some way?

PS - No one will care if you love one or another or your love is as free as you are. We're all just very nice to one another around here and if people are feeling each other up - well that's kinda embarassing and private no matter who ya are I'd think? At my age I'd think most people would say "Oh! I bet it don't matter what - everything you get be lookin like halloween!" heh heh I have been just like "not" for about 12 years so I really don't qualify to qualify others and I wouldn't hurt that place in anyone's heart for anything. Too big to be doing that.

 

We are closing the gates for the fall and winter October 1st. Not like ya can't visit but we have a lot of work to do and no money before winter. The homeless camper needs to be gotten ready as well but has to be moved back to the new site which has not been opened up in years and is overgrown. No plans but winter and not much in frills. could still use at least one resident caretaker that likes dogs and cas.

 

Due to aged brothers needing to stay in town this winter and my need to go out there and acquire funding for the critters we are short handewd in the forest for nothing more than love and a little help for our (animal) friends so I guess the gates are open to those who wish to "get away" to the woods for awhile.
You will still need to build or bring hut, camper or ? and there is no economy here so your wares may have to go to town with me or you could work at ranger boats maybe?

 

UPDATE: Wow! My HOME is closed and 3 of us and animals temporarily in limbo while the Church tries to re-settle us. It's gotten a bit violent and it appears that the Klan and such like are already going cannibal on each other down there.

The Church has closed the preserve in North Arkansas and removed all people and animals from the area.
Numerous conditions make North Arkansas unsafe for habitation and we do not recommend people go there. Travelers should avoid the area if possible.
Resources in the area continue to decline and all levels of society appear to be affected to the extent that a form of "quiet anarchy" has already begun to rise without check or the reasonable speculation that remedies will be available for some time.
The Church is currently re-settling the animals and their volunteers to an area which should remain more stable and which has less environmental hazards.
When re-settlement has been accomplished, members wishing to visit or needing sanctuary will be informed of the new location.
