    perhaps.

but you guys should listen to yourselves sometimes.

"crazies are everywhere" ... "but i treat everyone as equal?"

    okay...

those who have known mentally ill people

may not get the 'trendiness' of the job itself

as detailed by the original poster.

we all like different things - aside from being 'open minded' or not.

i've been to visit these places - to me

    they are isolated and sad.

wouldn't you rather hear "i enjoy working here because i help sick people"

rather than "it's fun working here because they are all insane"

many of which aren't of course (suicide attempts etc... which is also a hugely popular discussion here at hip)

    seems silly and contradictory lol.

but these are only my thoughts.

I see both the "sad" and the "trendy" sides of this job. Of course it's sad to see people suffering without control. But not all stories from there are upsetting. There's many patients who are "happy" or act happy. They make the best of what they have. Yes, sometimes jokes go around like saying "crazies are everywhere" but I would never joke in a serious situation. I've seen patients at their worst and it's scary.

I've known plenty of people with mental illness since I was a teenager and dealt with almost debilitating obsessive compulsive tendencies as a child that were passed off as "depression." Usually I am very open minded when it comes to anyone, but especially people that are a little "off". But I have a confession. There is a man in town who is maybe just a couple of years older than me who is schizophrenic and he has a home and refuses to go there. He likes to live on the streets and walk all over the place, yelling. He freaks me out. But I don't avoid him because he's schizophrenic, I avoid him because he doesn't take baths. :(

He has a mother that lives at home that is more than willing to feed him. And still, he wanders the streets. I think it's for socialization, though, even though he doesn't do it very well. My friend works a few overnights at a gas station here every week and says he comes in and my friend will give him a cigarette and smoke with him. Only time I've ever seen him at my work, he came in, got a free cup of water, and sat close to the dining room's side door and mumbled under his breath until he was done with his water, then he left. They say he's harmless, he's on medication, but he left his backpack, full of medication, in our parking lot a few weeks back. I think he's since gotten it back, but if he just randomly leaves it places, then what happens when he's not medicated anymore? I don't know that anyone could say for sure, I just know I sure hope I'm off work when that happens

Obsessive compulsive tendencies it is and has been for years a pet theory of mine that just such a tendency toward riches and/or power on the part of the so called 1% may account for a large percentage of the world's problems and maybe a few well selected meds.........

That's good, man. I hope you are grateful, because most people hate their jobs.
