I'm ready to start my dreads but wanted to run my method past some experienced folks. I have done a lot of research, but first I will tell you about my hair. My hair is fairly thin and straight as straight can be. It also isn't very long but has grown almost 2 inches in the last 2.5 weeks thanks to the prenatal vitamins my bebe inside requires. I once begain "neglecting" my hair, the first time I went to Florida. I only washed my hair once a week with a natural oil-free shampoo my foster mother had (can't remember the name of it now for the life of me). I also did not dry or brush it. My hair began to get wavy and eventually knot up after only a few weeks but the knots came out over night. I didn't continue with the process due to all the crap my boyfriend at the time, my boss, my father, and my foster parents gave me at the thought of me trying for dreads. Now for my mix-matched method I'm thinking about trying. I definitely do NOT want to use wax or a crochet hook. I was thinking about letting my hair go unbrushed, getting some Dr. Bronners to wash with, and limiting my washing. Once my hair is completely clean, oil free, and somewhat unruly enough for me to feel alright beginning my dreads I was thinking of using the wool twist and rip method to give me some beginner knots with better luck of staying. I do not want to use any product in my hair. When I wear braids for long periods of time I wrap them with thick embroidery floss, I find that this sometimes causes some nice knotting beneath it, could I do this with beginning dreads? I would do it in sort of a criss-cross fashion, leaving a lot of the hair exposed. My fear is that my hair will continue to come undone and I cannot sleep with wool on my pillow. Anyone think this method will work?
I started mine with twist and rip(though I didn't use wool) and my hair was very thin( freakishly baby fine ) and straight. My hair dreaded up very easily- though even straight/thin my hair was always tangle prone. I would stress not to go too long between washing , oily hair doesn't tangle and dread as easily as clean hair .I never changed my washing routine much, I was already using bs/ and acv to wash my hair for years before I twist and ripped- I think that may have made a bit of a difference.
I plan on dreading once i regain some length. I have the same type if hair and this is the method i plan on using. I can't wait to see how it turns out for you. Be sure to post pics
Just finished them with the help of my little sister! I ended up just using the twist rip method, it worked so much better on my hair than I thought it would! I'm super satisfied.
