I am considering getting my septum piercing, and I wondered if anyone had any pro's and con's that they thought I should know.
Also, I'd like more information on how they actually clean your nose before hand. Thank you!

Well one of the obvious cons would be trying to get a job. People still discriminate against this kind of stuff.
A pro would be it looks cool :)

I have mine done. For me, the piercer just swabbed the area with disinfectant. Super easy piercing, minus a involuntary little eye watering. Also one of the easiest piercings to heal I've ever had (of 25+).

Furthermore it is absolutely the easiest piercing to hide, so jobs etc isn't an issue. If you get it done with a retainer (looks like a staple) or a circular barbell, you just flip it up inside your nose and no one see it unless they look directly up your nose. Just let your piercer know you want to be able to flip it up :)

I honestly can't think of a con to septum piercings, aside from the tip of your nose being slightly tender for a couple days.

Don't do it! In winter, if you don't keep Vaseline in it constantly, the hole can dry out and bleed! Some people have severe problems with bleeding. Fortunately, I don't.

I got my piercing the "old fashioned" way, from snorting cocaine. I wish I didn't have the hole, but I do use it sometimes because it is there forever. I like the traditional Hindu rings that have a hidden hinge. They are hard to find in the US, but I have two that are white gold.

How is an employer going to know about it, if you don't wear anything in it at work? This is not a visible perforation.

Nobody in my office knows I have this piercing.

Nah. Cartilage never grows back. That's the whole problem with getting a piercing there.

I never make use of my perforation in the winter, and the hole is the same size now as it was the first year I had it.

But...if you wore a traditional Hindu full-circle nose ring to an interview, the company would have to think twice about not hiring you because of the risk of getting sued for religious discrimination. They can't legally ask you in the interview if you are Hindu, or just like that look.
