I agree with you opel_diamond, it doesnt grab my attention (like Blackwater Park or Still Life did) but I still need to give it a fair chance. This band is up there with my favorites for sure... My opinion on 'Heritage' *so far* is that it is pretty progressive and perhaps a bit more accessible than their previous albums (aside from Damnation) to non-fans...we'll see after I give it a few more listens and I'll get back to you.
the problem was that akerfeldt decided to try and stray and do something different and by doing so what was different to opeth turned out to be quite similar to everyone else. it was the original vocal dynamics and antithesis of musical styles that captured listeners in my opinion anyways. i think a band needs to innovate with their sound in order to remain acclaimed but also need to keep true to their core identity because changing to much can hamper an image just as badly as releasing the same album again and again.
I fucking love this band so much. And i like there new album to. Shuch a talented band great to see so meny others digging them to:d
Heritage is okay but it's their worst album by far. Still better than most crap out there these days though. Overall, they're a great band. It took me awhile to really get into them but now I see why they get so much praise. Orchid (In Mist She Was Standing is especially godlike), Still Life and Blackwater Park are my favorites.
