I enjoy watching a drug-based movie every now and then that has the main story line based around some sort of substance. There is a lot out there and some are not even that well known. I'd like to see what other people would recommend and perhaps give a brief description of the movie. I'll probably end up watching a lot of the recommendations! ------ Here are a few that I have watched and enjoyed. Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas- About 2 guys journey to Las Vegas ingesting many different substances and all the shenanigans that go on during there trip found it to be quite entertaining. Spun- A man's crazy week on a crystal meth binge, has a different style to it but is an overall great movie. Trainspotting- Film based on Heroin addiction a little bit slow paced and it's based in the UK but still worth watching. Requiem For A Dream- About the addiction of quite a few different people, definitely a dark movie as it shows a lot of nasty scenes but it gives a bigger message then people see it as. Rush- Two undercover cops that fall into the drug scene and end up becoming drug addicts themselves. ------ I'll keep on adding more and giving some better descriptions in the future, thought i'd just give a few for now to kick the thread off.
All these movies aren't necessarily centered around the drugs but the drugs play an integral part in all of them. Blow- Quality movie set in the 70's about a dealer coming up from pot to Coke. Half Baked- Stoner comedy Harold and Kumar go to White Castle- Stoner Comedy Cheech and Chong: up in Smoke- Stoner Comedy Basketball Diaries- It's about a high school kid who is a good basketball player looking to get a scholarship to a quality college school but then gets addicted to Heroin and starts running with the wrong crowd. Groove- A movie primarily about the rave scene but there are some references to drugs, I prefer Human Traffic overall but still this is worth a watch. Enter the Void- Starts off with a DMT trip and discusses other drugs as well and psychedelic concepts. A Scanner Darkly: Another movie about a fictional drug that's super addictive, this is shot in the same type of animation as Waking Life. Harvard Man: A good segment of this movie is about a guy tripping on 15,000 ugs of LSD or something absurd like that but the movie is primarily about a guy caught in a money heist scheme.
Heh. Nice How High - Two stoners somehow get into a top university and spend all their time getting high. It's a pretty shit movie, avoid it if you can.
Enter The Void, FTFY. The Altered States - Altered States is a 1980 American science fiction-horror film adaptation of a novel by the same name by playwright and screenwriter Paddy Chayefsky. It was the only novel that Chayefsky ever wrote, as well as his final film. Both the novel and the film are based on John C. Lilly's sensory deprivation research conducted in isolation tanks under the influence of psychoactive drugs like ketamine and LSD Fantastic Planet (1973) - This film takes place on a faraway planet where giants rule, and tiny humanoids must fight for their lives and their equality. A metaphor of class struggles (Not drug based but you should watch it under the influence) Naked Lunch - After developing an addiction to the substance he uses to kill bugs, an exterminator accidentally murders his wife and becomes involved in a secret government plot being orchestrated by giant bugs in an Islamic port town in Africa. (Yes it's as fucked as it sounds) Blueberry - In the 1870's, U.S Marshal Mike S. Blueberry tries to stop Wally Blount, the man who killed his girlfriend, from getting to a stockpile of gold hidden in Indian territory. On his way, he meets Prosit, a German villain on a persistent mission to find gold in the Superstition Mountains. (about the indian tribes in the frontier, ayahuasca related)
I've seen it today for the first time. It's excellent. Good characters, great director (I like Aronofsky ), it's definitely dark and loaded with heavy emotions . Four different people, all trying to find their path in life and make their dreams come true, but drug addiction destroyed everything... 9/10
