    grrrr

So there I am, smoking my pipe, sitting under a tree outside the co-op, as far away as possible from other people, entrances, and (I thought) spontaneous anti-smoker sanctimony.

"Excuse me sir, you're not really supposed to be smoking on coop property!!"

. . .as she gets into her couldn't-possibly-get-more-than-20 MPG gas guzzler with the "Love Gia" bumper sticker which, I'm sure, somehow magically transforms all of the hydro-carbons and other toxic emissions coming out of her car's tailpipe into magical pixie dust (biodegradable magical pixie dust).

Didn't even give me the obligatory snotty "thank you" when I said OK and moved.

So right now I'm surfing the internet looking for the stats that'll tell me how many packs of cigarettes someone would have to smoke in order to put the same amount of crap into the atmosphere as driving one mile. I'm hoping it's a lot. I want to be able to walk into the coop some time when she's working and go "Ya know, every time you drive 1 mile you pollute the environment about as much as I do smoking everyday for a month".

The best way to combat a self-righteous #@$^ is to be an even more self-righteous @$%. :D

Educating her might be a bit optimistic.

I'll settle for irritating her. :)

Pipes aren't even offensive. Cigarettes stink, there's no getting around that, but pipes smell quite pleasant. What a silly sanctimonious woman

You think her issue was pollution? It sounds like theres a rule in place that she was enforcing. Didn't sound particularly offensive.

    I think you should compromise.

Stuff her tailpipe with a tightly tied bundle of cigarettes.

Not because she REALLY deserves it, but because it would still be funny.

i really don't think the actual smoke can cause much pollution. just don't throw your butts (which you don't have with a pipe.)

if don't think she was talking about pollution though.

i remember on a cruise through alaskan waters, they said no smoking in certain areas. my dad was bitching about the diesel fumes coming from the stacks on the boat, didn't think his cigarette was gonna add much to the damage :) he never throws his cig butts, always pinches out the cherry and sticks the rest in his pocket.

Sounded more to me like she was making up rules on her own: I've been sitting under that tree smoking my pipe for almost 2 years now and no one's ever said anything to me about it before other than "Cool pipe".

Also, if I'd been maybe 1 foot farther west I would have been off the property (no shade there though).

So no: not much doubt in my mind she was having a spontaneous sanctimony
    episode.

No joke man: I really do think she has a problem with lower-class looking people. After 2 years of going to the coop I'm on a first name basis with every other cashier except her. Never even gotten a smile out of her.

Nah, sounds like a waste of good tobacco (would be funny though).

I'm pretty sure it's just a matter of "Oh goody!!! A chance to bug a complete stranger over something that's none of my business!!" some people get off on that crap. :p

Yeah, that's one nice thing about smoking a pipe: people usually either ignore you or compliment you on the smell.

Some people,,usually women (sorry, girls),,have a thing about authority,,that is, wanting to be one. They use any opportunity to exercise what little authority they think they can. It's usually the "power-starved" ones that do it, to compensate.

I was taking the bus today, just a few miles, and it was kind of interesting, since a young woman got on that had the curliest blonde hair, and boobs (curly ones!), and was jammering on about nothing, with the word "Daddy" interspersed frequently in this on-going convo with no-one in particular. She was a real party, you could tell, and she sat down right in front of me, in one of the sideways seats, so I got a good view of the body parts,,yum.

Well,,it was obvious to me as well as others that there was something going on in this woman's brain that wasn't going on in the rest of our brains, so the assumption was "crack". I took the initiative to have some fun, and began to tell her that she was "Betty Boop". She just kept yammering.

So I took out my harmonica, and began playing. (I humbly assert that I play better harmonica than most, and have never gotten anything but praise for my playing, when I'm out and about. Bands always ask me back.)

The driver, this huge black woman at the wheel, started to call out "Who's playing that music??", and I said nothing, but just "looked around", like it was someone else. Then I began to play again, just before my stop, just to see if I could get tossed off the bus. As she slowed to a stop, I continued playing, and played all the way out the door, turning and offering a few ending notes as I hit the sidewalk. The old, bitchy white woman who was talking with the driver yelled at me a bit, stating that I was "showing disrespect for the driver". Well,,yeah.

Walking to catch my transfer, a young woman who was on the bus, witnessing all of this, told me that she loved my playing.

That's the very first time I've EVER been told to quit playing by a bus driver. They all seem to like it, and tell me so, and ask how long I've been playing, etc.,,,except for her.

I think she's one of those "power-starved" ones, looking for opportunities to "remind others of THE RULES".

My dad used to quote a friend of his,,,"Rules are made for people who can't think."

I know it's a generalization, but yeah,,there are those types.

take it up with the co-op association

is using a car prohibited on the list of co-op rules you agreed to?

is smoking on the property on the list? ;)

Anyway, I didn't actually sign anything, so technically I should be able to do whatever I want.
