little johny's parents wanted johnny to have each of their last names so his name on his birth certificate is johnny thompson-jones

little sally's parents did the same thing to sally and her name is sally martin-murphy

those 2 little brats grow up....parents long divorced....poor sally's dad is in jail for not paying child support....johnny's mom had a brief meth habit....but now sally and johnny are married and sally is pregnant

they want to carry on the tradition of the hyphen names so their kid will be called billy martin-murphy-thompson-jones

and it just gets worse for every generation

Sometimes it works out to have a 'double barreled' name - mine is family-based not marriage-based, hence the ''FP''.

    Suits me, Sir!:sunny:

The tradition usually is to take the paternal dynastic element (father's) and recombine them into a new double. Except in some aristocratic/royal cases where a triple name is adopted such as Holstein-Gottorp-Romanov. But that is overkill for most people and just looks snobby. :D

My son has a hyphenated last name. Wasn't married to his father. He's 12 now...I hate it, and so does he. So many places don't understand it's hyphenated!!

i made sure my son had his moms last name at the very end so that it would be easy to drop after the relationship went south for good...it was rocky right from the first insertion...now she's gone and the only place we need that name is in court

Why don't they each just pick one of their hyphenated named and just always keep it to 2 names? I wouldn't want my wife to take on my last name. That is so patriarchal it makes me want to vomit. I mean I won't even be getting married anyway.
