Hi all, I've been thinking a lot about going barefoot. I live in Wollongong Australia and I was just wondering what any one else has experienced nation wide? I know it's completely acceptable to be barefoot around beach areas and no one pays any notice (I used to live up in Byron Bay) but now I'm living in a city I'm nervous about venturing out barefoot. Thoughts? Namaste!
Hi. I've always imagined Aus to be barefoot friendly but obviously I'm wrong or you wouldn't be asking! Here in UK I've only encountered any hassle with one particular chain of stores. Otherwise people don't even notice, or may just give a passing glance (which actually makes me feel quite proud). I would say just go for it and see what happens. Don't be tempted to carry back up footwear just in case....I find you're then always thinking "maybe I should put these on to go in here", then if you give in and put them on you feel you've let yourself down, then have to go through the whole thought process of wondering when it's right to remove them again. Good luck and keep us posted!
Like Charlie I assumed Australia to be pretty relaxed with regards bare feet. He's right that here in the UK nobody really cares, Australians I thought had a similar attitude. I say go for it, relax and don't worry, other people care less about what you wear on your feet than you do The 'looks' are usually interest or curiosity - just as if you're wearing a loud knitted sweater!
In really beachy areas yes of course, barefoot isnt looked twice at but in the city I'm living in I'm nervous about wearing barefeet to say, the shopping mall. People can be really judgemental!
Who cares if they do judge you? Australians are in my experience extremely judgmental in general, you can't let other people's small mindedness stop you from being who you are. Better to be disliked for who you are than loved for who you aren't. I always figure, what's the worst that could happen? If you do feel really insecure, you could always keep some flip flops in a backpack or somethin, in case someone tries to refuse you entry to their shop. (Though tbh, if someone said I couldn't shop there without shoes I would feel much better about not giving them any of my money anyway)
I think you're worrying a bit too much and maybe making a big deal of it in your head. That's not a criticism, we've all been there at the beginning. Even if people are judgmental, what right have they to stop you doing what you want to do in your life. Just go for it and to hell with them!!
Thankyou both for your input. I think I'm going to purchase some sweet little crochet barefoot sandals so I don't feel so naked! they're so sweet
