im thinking about joining this commune up in Deadwood, Oregon. it's called Alpha Farm. i have done some research on it, and it looks pretty legit. i just wanna know if anyone has any stories to tell about this place. good ones, bad ones, any...im just curious. much love
I have heard of them, though it's been a while since I checked them out last. They could very well be legit, but that doesn't mean you'll like them or that they are "meant for you". Different folks have different strokes. Know what I mean?
I'm interested in this place too, but have not been able to find much. Thier store and cafe are awesome, though!
I don't know what fizz is talking about. I've visited there briefly years ago, and it was really cool.
i too am also thinking of going there but just to make sure im looking up different places around there
We just a lady with her daughter here at our community in Massachusetts that was living at Alpha Farm for 9 months and stated that their was a lot of drama, bickering, fighting. We were going to go to Alpha before we made our way from Michigan to MA and glad we didn't. I have heard "too much control", "belittling", and "negative energy" are all present at the current moment.
I've visited it twice, a few years apart. Personally, it's not for me. I won't say "don't visit", but will advise you to do so with a grain of salt. Merely by visiting, one can learn about communes and how they work, and network socially. Now, the poop: Turnover is high. I didn't see the same faces when I came back the second time. When your visitor guide tells you she is leaving because she thinks the place not democratic enough, you know something is up. While there the second time, I learned that only 5 members were full members with full voting rights (2 of which were privileged enough to live in Eugene and work city jobs). The remainder of the population are non-voting provisional members. I gathered it is that way year after year after decade. So, that stuff about approx. 20 members , that one always sees it proclaim, is a bit silly. Guy in another state told me it is Carolyn Este's personal psychological experiment. Lastly, a guy in Oreon told me the place is known to take money from new members and then find a reason to reject them. Maybe they return the money, I dunno, but even if they do, I think they do it in installments. Other than that, it was a fun visit.
