I'm unsure if i wan't to get dreads yet or not, but before i can even consider thinking about that i'm going to need to grow out my hair first.

I've had relatively short hair all my life, i did grow it out once though but it only reached a medium length before i had to finally cut it because of how ridiculous it looked, i kept telling myself "this is just an awkward stage, i'm sure it'll get better" but it never did and it just looked hideous so i caved in and cut it off.

The issue with my hair is that i have two cowlicks, one on each side of my head right on the hairline, but they're only noticeable when my hairs short, so i always have my hair done up either in a fohawk or just the front part spiked up, it's what i've always done, if i don't do that my hair looks ridiculous. So the issue with that and growing it out is, once my hair reaches a certain length i can't really put it up anymore because it's to long and also ends up looking quite weird... yet it's to short to put down without the cowlicks showing, so i don't know what to do there?

Then when my hair reaches that awkward medium length stage, it also looks horrible... i'm unsure of how it looks afterwards because it's never gotten any longer than that before... my hair tends to naturally grow out the same way Justin Beibers does and i hate that, i did everything i could to get rid of that Bieber hair but i couldn't find any other way to style it, i also have really puffy straight hair.

I'll show a picture of how my hair is now (how it usually always is) then another from a long time ago when i tried to grow out my hair... but i'll be blurring out my face, wouldn't want anyone i know to come across this one day :p

    Here's my short normal hair:

And here's the medium length awkward hair:
    View attachment 49112

So, i need some tips on to how to style it when it gets to long to put up but to short to put down, then when it is long enough to put down... what do i do so i don't look like Bieber? How can i get out of that awkward phase? Do i get it cut and trimmed throughout the growing process? Everyone else with long hair looks good and natural with it... i tend to look like a twig with a mop on my head..

True, but i've never had long hair so i'm unsure if i'm one of those people :p

I think everyone's hair looks a little awkward during that middle stage when growing it out, i'm just looking for tips on how to make it look less awkward, if that's possible.

I'm just thinking now's the perfect time, i'm graduating school and taking a year off before i go to university... so it won't be to embarressing during this phase now

That could work, i may look a little odd though with a big forehead and nose though lol, maybe i'll get some beanies or something

It got about 3 inches or so longer than that, but that was the only picture i had left. But yes it's still pretty short, but it's the longest my hairs ever been

My hair is short , the best advice i can give you is if you feel that awkward towards growing your hair out then the best bet is keep your hair short ,

Having tangled hair can be awkward at times too. A lot of the fun is learning to not care (relatively) about what your hair looks like.

I have a similar problem, except that I've had long hair before, so I know it looks ridiculous on me, but i still want to dread really badly. I'm probably just gonna say fuck it and go for it. Not like i give a fuck what anyone thinks.

    stop being a girls blouse
grow your hairs if your committed to get though the awkward stages of normal hair growth you should be up for dreads dreads have a much longer awkward period time and patience is key remembering they cant get worse!
if your worried about looking silly wear a hat or some shit but wearing hats etc full time can inhibit hair growth allegedly
just let it go and go for it fuck what other people think you know itl be sweet when you have wicked looking dreadz

    yeah...

True... fuck it i guess, not like i have anyone to impress anyways, who gives a shit what my hair looks like :p lol how long does the hair typically have to be before starting the dreading process? I guess it all depends whether how long you want the dreads to be...?

my first question is when the hell did it go from being the Beatles stage to the Bieber stage.... Personally this bothers me, i have no idea why though.

Anywhoo, in answer to the topic question, how to grow out your hair, the answer is, do not under any circumstances, go to anybody with a scissors and ask them to cut it off.

If you dont like when your hair is like that, get yourself a shit tonne of gel and slick that shit back, looks kinda badass. otherwise, get a hat dude, live in it until you get through the beatles phase, we have all been there, i spent a year in a hat when i was 19, not for any other reason than i really liked how i looked in a beanie.

    Oh and Tripper

i fixed that there for you

    with the guys above

i've been growing my hair for a little less than a year, but have consistently grown my hair to a considerable length for the past...long time...

your hair will go through MANY different 'awkward' lengths. i found out that no matter how awkward it looks for a week-2 weeks, it isn't worth to get a "trim" and look like a fucking faggot and shave your head and try again next year...what a stupid mistake that was haha

your hair looks better, IMO longer. It looks pretty bieberish and fruity, but it doesn't have to be depending on how you carry yourself. that's the key to growing your hair out - forget styling gel and a set hair style. growing your hair out obviously entails a constantly changing 'style' for your head.

i have just always left my hair alone, and that has suited me pretty well. i'm lucky that i don't have a job that requires me to comb it or anything, i think my head looks better when i don't comb it because it naturally curls, perhaps your hair will curl too or at least start waving - this is key cause having body in your hair makes it 1) easier to dread and 2) not as much awkwardness as thin hair

Yeah, 3-12 months of growth often feels quite awkward, and I didn't much like the appearance of it, but .....
And then it's not so bad.

For me it's all about practicality. I want to do minimum amount of maintenance, and that's what I tell people who talk about my hair.
"Why don't you have short hair?"
"Because then I have to keep cutting it every fucking month."

(Btw, those people are weird. Who gives a shit about someone else's hair? The only person whose hair I care about is my gf's, because I think she's hotter with long hair.)

If you let your hair grow long there generally doesn't need to be much styling in my opinion. Yes, there will be an awkward stage once it covers your ears but is not nearly near your shoulders, you have to bear with that. By the way, when I looked back at pics where my hair was considered to be in the awkward stage with hindsight it didn't look that akward at all. So it might just be between your ears (instead of awkwardly covering them :p). Once it is longer than your ears and coming closer to your shoulders it will generally hang down by the weight and look fine. It only takes a few months to get there.

Hair grows about a half an inch a month. You need several months to even approach getting it long. I have kept mine long most of my life.
