yet, "what's the last thing you eaten" is still a current thread title... along with "the all new, new, new, new, all all all new new all new new all body shot thread"
It always amazes me that some people are so bothered by small spelling errors on forums. Yeah, there's no talking to people like that. Just be polite and insist they produce a copy of the law. Try to show them evidence it is untrue if you can.
I produced a copy of the health departments letter from that barefoot society site, manager said "well then it's my rule". I think if I press the issue, his superior will make something up about him being able to make rules if there's something dangerous happening:daisy: Because we all know there's no real rule.
Google bare feet and Cal Tech. There are articles about how many students go barefoot everywhere there, including the cafeteria. There is a girl's school somewhere in the US, whose name escapes me at the moment, that is famous for barefoot students. There was also a guy who went to school in, I believe it was San Diego, shirtless. I think that was somewhere here on HF. I am long out of Uni, but younger friends in the US tell me that it is more teachers and various school employees that press the issue, not the institution itself. If a Prof. gives you trouble, switch classes. Kids today don't seem to realize they can do that, and instead stick with both bad teaching and badgering Prof.'s, when they don't have to. It's your money; don't put up with a bad experience.
Reed College is the one I could not think of. Also, this prior link at HF: http://www.hipforums.com/newforums/showthread.php?t=179423
Thanks Chuck. With all the help of people on here I've got quite an impressive list of schools, colleges, and universities that allow bare feet now: I'm absolutely sure now that, while it doesn't seem to be that well known, there are an utterly vast number of schools, colleges, and (particularly) Universities allow, and in the case of a few schools in New Zealand and other places REQUIRE bare feet on campus! If anyone else has any more they can list I would absolutely love to hear of them! I am particularly interested in any, like the Maori schools, that require it as part of the dress code, well as any in the UK that allow it (I know there are a few).
There are schools in the UK that allow bare feet!!?? Whilst as we know things are pretty laid back here about being bf in public, I'd be amazed if any school allowed it, though it would be brilliant if any do (and I'll be really jealous that I didn't go there)
I don't know about primary\secondary schools (tbh I doubt it), but I do know there are quite a few colleges and universities where it is allowed, or at least tolerated. Unfortunately I don't have any names yet, but I know a guy who has one.
Like I said in one of my earlier posts: Your choice for a new school should not depend on their barefoot-friendlyness. Walking barefoot is great fun but not the most important thing in life.
In some cultures, wearing shoes in someone's home is disrespectful. Shoes are considered dirty because as you walk around town, you are likely to step in things that your guests do not want brought into the house. In some places, they also have the logical custom of foot washing after you leave your footwear at the entrance. A workplace or school is not regarded the same as a private residence, but I can see how a preference for bare feet indoors would extend to these places as well. I am not familiar with Maori culture, but certain clothing or the lack of it is part of culture for many people. As I see it, a school that allows or encourages bare feet is indicative of an overall mindset that would be a good place to learn. Sure, find out if they offer a good education in your chosen field, but all other things being equal, I would vote with my feet!
I haven't worn shoes in over a year, apart from when I've been told to at college and for a couple of days when it snowed. For me to wear shoes now is extremely uncomfortable since I'm simply not used to them. Since I'm not going to be wearing them all summer it is going to be even worse for me when I get back and they make me, I have already started to have balance problems when made to wear them.
Could you go barefoot in the hallways and campus lawns and slip on some sandals right before you enter the classroom? Not ideal, but the classroom is probably where you are getting the most flack for your bare feet.
You can add the University of Southampton UK to your list too. It was a while ago now, i was class of 2005. In my last year there was a guy on campus who was barefoot 24/7 and he never seemed to get any hassle. Werent in the same year or classes so never got talking to him though, but wish i had now. I went barefoot a few times too and never had a problem. Others did sometimes when the sun was out in the summer. The union shop did put a sign up once saying shirt and shoes must be worn, but just ignored it! That was about the only opposition i saw, but generally not a problem.
