" Defiance " starring Daniel Craig is a truly great movie. It has it all: action, romance, historical importance and more. It is the story of Jews fighting in Nazi occupied Belorussia [ Western Russia ] during WWII. This is a great movie and you will not be disappointed. And I am not Jewish so please don`t cap on me for promoting this amazing TRUE story of Jews fighting as partisans in the forests of Belorussia. ...Oscar

Jaredfelix asked me for some films once, this is the list i gave him of a few of my favourites and some over looked classics, i can highly reccomend all of them:

Das Experiment (2001)- one of the best german films i've ever seen (and i fucking love german cinema) avoid the american remake.

funny games (2007)- micheal Haneke. as grim as grim can be. the american and austrian versions are photo-perfect copies of each other, so whichever you opt for makes little difference, id go for the one with Tim Roth in, personally.

Lola und Billidikid (1999)- whats it like to be a gay turkish immigrant in berlin? pretty crappy, it turns out.

Die Falscher (2007)- the fantastic true story of the nazi plot to make forge millions in US currency in concentration camps. complicity and resistence in the face of atrocities. okay, i promise the next one will be english

Dead Man's Shoes- see? fucking love shane meadows, also see "a room for romeo brass" and "this is england"

Naked (1993)- theres a terrible stereotype about British films all being miserable. this film does nothing to contradict that. great film, though.

M (1931)- Fritz Lang makes the leap to sound and kicks it outta the park first try, beautiful piece of work.

ammorres perros (2000)- NO ANIMALS WERE HARMED IN THE MAKING OF THIS FILM. no, really. still not an easy watch if you're a dog lover.

The Devils (1971)- my favourite film of all time. sort of hard to get hold of, but if you can MY GOD is it worth it. i made a thread about it once (which proved, ahem, less than popular lol): http://www.hipforums.com/newforums/showthread.php?t=443854

Kontroll (2003)- not enough people saw this film, don't be one of them.

Little malcolm (and his struggle against the eunuchs) (1974)- a film that asks the really important
questions- what if instead of being kicked out of art school in vienna, hitler got kicked out of art school in the north of england in the mid 70's? what if everyone ignored him? and wouldnt he have been a bit calmer if he just got laid? HARD AS FUCK to get hold of, but wortha search, original score by george harrison, too.

sexy beast (2000) ben kingsley and ray winstone in one of the best written kitchen sink gangster films ive seen in a while

The story of ricky (1991)- THE FUNNIEST KUNG FU FILM EVER MADE. THIS FILM IS NOT INTENDED AS COMEDY. i have seen this film with friends hundreds of times and it never gets old. the most over the top gory action scenes and ridiculous dialogue ever.

Gangster no.1 (2000)- we used to have this thing called the UK Film council, they financed awesome stuff. like this.also, trainspotting. its gone now.

The lives of others (2006)- surveillance film to feed the paranoia in all of us :) uplifting and beautiful in its own way, too

Rope (1948) AND strangers on a train (1951)- weirdly overlooked hitchcock films, but two of his best. also FRENZY is badass.

the pusher trilogy by nick winding reffin. badass verite gangster flicks, brutal, gritty, excellent.

die welle (2008)- many don't like this film. i do. a study of the rise of fascism and autocracy told in a school classroom, highlights the ease with which it could happen again. this is basically the mission statement of New german cinema.

waltz with Bashir (2008)- brilliant piece of animation. a veteran of the israel/palestine war tries to remember his part in the genocides.

touch of evil (1958)- orson welles. nuff said.

re-animator (1985)- get drunk with friends, watch this, its a great horror film and its funny as fuck, great plastic effects and ridiculous ammounts of cheese. do it. return of the living dead part 1 falls into this category too.

shallow grave (1994)- danny boyles first film, my favourite of his.

I stand alone (1998) bugger me, this is a dark list of films, man, i'm gonna haveta end on a high...

agguire: the wrath of god (1972) nuff said. also, fitzcarraldo.he dragged a boat over a mountain to make that movie, the least we can do is watch it :)

human traffic (1999) the funniest (and, tbf, pretty faithful ina tongue in cheek sorta way) film about rave culture i've seen in a.... well, ever lol many's the night extracts from this have been quoted religiously just before the come up :D

its a fairly eclectic mix, but they're all amazing, hope theres something there you like the look of :)
