Japan has now shutdown it's last operating nuclear power plant. For the first time since 1970, Japan has no nuclear power plants in operation. Before the tsunami and meltdown at the Fukushima Daichi nuke plant, there were 54 operating nuclear power plants in Japan providing 30% Japan's energy needs.

This summer will test the ability of Japan's infrastructure to provide enough power without the use of nuclear energy. If there are few problems, then the future of nuclear power in Japan may be in jeopardy.

And this story says there is no technological solution to cleaning up Fukushima...

Cool! The Japanese could be a test case for the rest of us in how a modern industrialized nation goes post-nuclear energy. Let's hope they go post-fossil fuel as well.

Japan was as I recall the only country to ban the gun for aa couple of hundred years because it was unmanly under the code Buschido (sp?) of the Samori culture. See a book called "Putting Down the Gun".

As wild and crazy as their culture may seem at times I honestly respect their people more then any other. They have this sense of unity and humanism for one another that i adore. You can steer them in the wrong direction but you can't entirely corrupt or blind their souls.

Very true stash napt, the videos on the news after the tsunami really proved how strong willed and close nit the entire country is.

I still don't understand why japanese porno has all the good bits blurred out of it... whether it's two folks in the missionary position or even if it is a octopus android alien that's finger banging a 12yo in the ass with one of it's tentacles

Some people praise the censoring in Japanese porn because it requires directors and creators to go outside the box (literally, the black censor box) and that's why their shit is so whacky.

Now Japan has joined Germany, Italy and Switzerland in going No Nukes.

While the U.S., China and India are going for building many more.

    Which group is retarded?

America needs to wake the fuck up big time. With the shifting poles, west coast and new madrid faults, it's just a matter of time. We're on a ticking time bomb only worse. You can rebuild after TNT, you can't rebuild after a meltdown.

What a crazy gamble, what fucking insanity!

Let's not forget New Zealand, one of the few countries that bans any nuke ships from even coming into port. (if they still do...)

Neither group is retarded. And did you forget what brought them to this conclusion in the first place? Building one at the wrong place.
About the people and culture: I'm sure there is an equal amount of sensible and lovable people in Japan as everywhere else but from my experience their culture is fucked up. The good and sensible things really don't outweigh the disturbingly weird things.

"Building one at the wrong place" - There is NO RIGHT PLACE for a nuclear reactor.

As far as Japan goes, it's one of the most interesting cultures to study because it retains a lot of old ways still ingrained in their consciousness, even tho their society is so modern and affluent.

Their attitude towards foreigners (inferior races) really is one of their major faults, but the Chinese and other societies think the same way (Gaijin). Fortunately the Japanese keep their racism more or less private as they do so many things.

So you have the Asian mystique of being inscrutable because they don't display their emotions in public too often. They have learned to repress a lot in order to live in such a dense and closed in society.

This repression is what lurks in the subconsciousness of the Japanese people, waiting to explode. But rather that explode, which would be very un-Japanese like, many young people are turning inward and hiding inside their own rooms, not even coming out for meals. This is a phenomenon that is growing in Japan and belies the mental issues they've been repressing for decades.

It's this kind of extreme social control that really fucks up a society. Rather than rewarding individuality and freedom, Japanese society rewards conformity and complacency. The Fukushima incident highlighted the Japanese inability to deal with anything "out-of-control".

For such a highly controlled society, they were powerless to deal with the crisis. All the government and corporate officials had no experience dealing with an out-of-control situation, and merely applied their usual bureaucratic methods to something that required out-of-the-box thinking.

And that's just it. The Japanese have created this big, beautiful box to live in, and they cannot see beyond it, nor can they break out of that box that centuries of subordination to social conventions has embedded in their psyche.

But perhaps Fukushima has awakened a new generation to the dangers of nuclear power and hopefully the dangers of having such a closed, rigid society unable to cope with a fast changing world...

I saw the oddest story about Chernobyl. It was reverting to wilderness and thousands of wild animals were returning, roaming around abandoned farms and villages. Because they live shorter lives, most animals suffer less from the radiation (and natural selection weeds out the mutants quite nicely), but humans still cannot live there and may not for a long time. This is like the Forbidden Zone for human kind, a dangerous, but beautiful place, totally free from human life. Now imagine the entire planet free from human life.
Wait a minute! I am human.

If nuclear science never makes a mistake, if countries remain stable throughout the millenia, then we don't have a thing to worry about. Relax, we'll be fine! (won't we?)

I'll be fine, I can't speak for the coming generations though. And yes, I've seen in a documentary wild life returned to Chernobyl as well. Pretty neat :) Although not so odd when I think about it... they can't read the warning signs :p But it's cool that they seem to be functioning well.

But come on folks, it's not just the super rich all controlling corporations, it's human nature itself. It's the way that we are as a species.

    Our Chimp curiosity.

    Never fear.
    The up and coming:

There is Nuclear Fusion to come. It just builds a Sun, right here on the Earth. Sure why not? I bet we could figure out how. And that "probably" won't hurt anything. Right? And then we could build hundreds of them here on the surface of the Earth.

I think that turning the entire Earth into a new Sun could be looked upon as a "Bright Future" Don't you?

    The up and coming:

And then we have Large Hadron Collider (LHC). How about we create a small BLACK HOLE? just a minute one. Even if it's the very nature of black hole to devourer all matter or all Mass.

I think that turning the entire Earth into a new Black Hole could be looked upon as a "Dark Future" Don't you?

    The up and coming:
And if that's not enough, we have anti-matter to create. Cool Huh? And the theory is that anti-matter or negative matter will Negate All matter. That sounds fun. I'll bet you can't wait.

We could have one unimaginable ex- or im- plosion and then nothing exists. (NO MATTER) No matter LOL.

I think that turning the entire Earth into a NO MATTER could be looked upon as a "Nothing Future" Don't you?

"Eat, Drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we will die."

The Bible or Epicureans. Epicurus (BC 342-271). You pick. We're all going to die sooner or later. But will there still be an Earth? Or Humans.

    Have fun Hippies!
