I came across a link to this TED video on youtube in the comments on a documentary I was watching on topdocumentaryfilms.com, and it touched on a subject I've seen on every forum I've ever been on that never has a good ending to the thread. religion vs religion and atheism vs religion.

this guy really gives a good speech about it.

beliefs aren't "vs" anything. i think that's the big problem people in the kind of society that dominates today's world have such a hard time getting their heads around.

My beliefs are right, yours are wrong. That's how it is. If you disagree then we can start a Gihad right here, mother fucker! :)

Yup, if your beliefs are different from mine, that means only one thing. One of us is wrong. And I can tell you right now, I'm rather partial to my beliefs. So, Jihad it is, mother fucker! Jihad it is!

except that they are when one belief system doesn't allow another belief system to exist. kind of how christians in america want to tell everybody what to do with their bodies. it becomes a belief versus belief issue when one belief forces itself on others. that's definitely what's happening in religion vs. religion and religion vs. atheism

They are a substitute for knowledge. A symbol chosen to represent an unknown variable.

Religion.... Either the youth of the world is becoming disconnected to this "god" or we really are going to hell.. All kids nowadays disregard religion, especially on the internet. It's no longer belief vs belief its now becoming atheism vs all religions. We can't explain shit so we put some figure in retrospect.

It seems that every belief system contains proof of its correctness as well as proof of its incorrectness, thereby allowing one to accept or to deny.

That depends on your criteria for acceptance.

But then again, everyone's criteria for acceptance contains proof of its own correctness as well as proof of its own incorrectness.

    Correct?

For instance, theists will say that there must be a creator since every effect must have a cause. But that does not hold up since the theist also says that nothing made God. The problem of infinite regress is apparent.

If you don't want a fight, but someone else does, are you always free to walk away?
Maybe until they have you backed up against a wall and you have no more room to back away?

  20. Good video. With dark matter, I really think that the universe could just stop making sense at some scale. Maybe we assume that everything needs a cause. Which is practically the same thing as just saying that some force we can't detect causes it. As far as possibilities go, certainly it's possible that magic just happens to exist. Not that I think scientists would ever stop looking for a cause, but it would be pretty radical if the galaxies rotated like they do for no particular reason. You have to admit that'd be pretty cool. It would be like living in Disney World.
