A report by a Russian researcher says that 500,000 Apple Macs have been infected by the Flashback Trojan. The virus installs itself via a Flash update. Half of the infected Macs are in the US and even at Apple headquarters in California. According to the report the virus has already been neutralized by various updates. But for those who haven't updated, their computers might still be exposed and could be taken over remotely. This virus has probably infected PCs too, but my own computer has warned me about this trojan several times (I have a good updated anti-virus). If you recently installed a Flash update, you should run a virus check. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-17623422
Oh shit I just updated it. I'm new to mac is there something that is free that I can scan my computer with? Nevermind it's amazing what a little reading will do
Aww.. Poor mac users.. I lol at this.. because give it time.. and I bet 99% of all mac users will be infected.. mainly because mac users are dumb
Mines not infected, and I'm not dumb. I got my computer for free, it was part of a scholarship that I received. I love my mac and I will NEVER switch back to a PC.
HA i was wondering when this would happen. about time, now mac os has nothing on windows lol linux will be next but not for a long time. mac had a good market share there.
Mine's fine. And I would never go back to a PC. BTW, anyone who laughs at someone whose computer catches a virus should be suspect...and deserves to catch an especially nasty one.
Oh, but wait... I thought Macs NEVER get infected! It's impossible with the Mac OS, right? That's always been the big advantage touted by Mac users far and wide... As Jared points out, it's never been worth it to hack macs as there are so many times more PCs for them to hack. And in this particular case, Apple put it's own users at much higher risk than necessary by not dealing with the bug immediately, but instead weeks went by while they worked on their OWN fix. Meanwhile hundreds of thousands more macs got infected with no recourse. Once again, Apple's proprietary OS works against those who use it. Better to be exclusive so you can charge more, make incredible profit margins, and keep your users hooked on your products than provide better quality hardware, far more software, for a much lower price. And I LOVE the way Apple users are quick to point out that Apple uses the same Factory (with horrible working conditions) as other computer manufacturers, yet their computers cost twice as much as the others made at the same factory. You're paying a LOT extra for the LOGO...
Yes, Macs are expensive, and yes, I'm aware we're buying into the name. However, the expense is worth it, because rather than deal with the threat of a disabling virus on a constant basis, Mac users enjoy the relative freedom from worry 99% of the time. With a Mac, multiple windows can be open at once without slowing down the system, plus many other very useful features that PCs only dream of. It is my sneaking suspicion that Microsoft is responsible for many of the Windows-based viruses out there...think about it: Wouldn't it make good (business) sense to create a problem for which you sell the solution????
Ummm..... I never have any problems running with multiple windows open or even multiple programs running simultaneously on a PC. Not sure where you got this idea from but it's not true. Sounds like Apple Spin to me... I've also never had a disabling virus on a Windows PC...
I checked my Mac and it's not infected. I've never had anti-virus software before, never needed it, but maybe it's getting to the point where I should consider getting something. By the way, Mac users never said that it was impossible to infect them, just that it was a lot harder compared to Windows, and time has proven that to be true. I love my Mac and I believe now that I will never use Windows again, at home or at work. I'm happy about that.
There are Linux distros that will run on mac . http://distrowatch.com/ Mal ware can be written to run on any thing , windows , mac, Linux , ect. desert rat
Multi-tasking is more dependent on the processor and the amount of RAM in a system than the OS. Guess what, Macs use the exact same hardware that PC's use. I routinely have multiple applications open and running at once with no problems whatsoever. Right now I have 3 browser windows going, VLC is playing a movie and I have a game running as well, plus the usual anti-virus and OS features. I don't notice any issues. Now that's just silly. Microsoft doesn't gain anything by malware infecting Windows systems, except derision. Plus they don't sell any anti-virus software, they give it away free.
Same here. I won't say that I haven't had problems with my Mac, but the problems are so easy to fix. I had to call Apple Care (which came free with my computer) and after that I probably won't have to call them again. Everything is very easy to navigate, it runs better than ANY pc I've ever owned or used and I've tried several pc's.
Trojans can and will happen..... I once left mf own all over my school's macs, it looked like firefox, but opened a background app that made the computer beep for ever, and wouldn't let you shut down or log out, that required the plug pulled or the terminal used to kill the process. You take a trojen in by being careless, like the trojans did with that horse.... a virus requires no user interaction. You can make a trojan for ANYTHING..... if the user trusts a program, it can do anything. Skip, I's suprised at you, I thought you'd use linux, even just on the principle of freedom/copyleft. For those asking about a mac "scan", a few exist, for places where inept oit departments require it for all computers..... they won't find anything, or help...... Just don't get any trojans.
