Do you agree with the American writer Jean Twenger's opinion on we are "generation of me" instead of "generation of we" and we are obsessed with money, image and fame, who paid less attention on politics and environmental problems ans so on?

Those people do exist; their species is definitely strongly represented in the media. But this generation is diverse...all kinds of worldviews, moral philosophies, levels of intelligence...
The loudest or most visible folks don't necessarily represent the majority...

Actually we have several generations of me's and gimme's co-existing, and everyone looks to government as the source of a simple solution to a problem which government even with the best of intentions most often only makes worse and more complex.

No matter how hard you try, you cannot borrow your way out of debt. Even with the massive increase of the money base by the Fed, there is not enough money to fund the Federal budget if all money was confiscated. And once that money begins to be released into the economy, reducing it's value relative to what the dollar is worth currently, it will only begin a cycle of price increases, and wage demands, which benefit government to the detriment of the working taxpayer, and even more so those who depend on government provided entitlement programs. But it produces what we perceive as economic growth for the government to brag about.

Sadly, the U.S. has no choice but to devalue the U.S. dollar, which is going to happen no matter which party wins in 2012.

I used to really think that about Americans, and to an extent it's certainly true (that they're selfish and materialistic) but I've modified my position after I came to the part of Europe I'm in now. The people in this part of the world are much more self-centered than Americans. Americans, at the end of the day, have much more of a sense of community and the common good than these people do. And the environment? America has much stricter environmental laws and a sense of what it means to keep the air and water clean than these people do. These folks will burn all their toxic garbage, including plastic and tires in their back yards all day, smoke the whole town up, and nobody gives a damn. Where I come from in the States, you'll be arrested if you do something like that.

The I generation. Entitlement generation...ad infinitum
Every generation seems to get labeled this way (except the greatest generation)

It's just humanity. Same old, same old and has little to do with 'when'
I could easily pick other generations where fame, money and power at the expense of others and the environment was way worse than now. I dare say that its a fact that we are doing way better now in terms of violence towards each other and the environment than we have in past generations.

Guess I just got a peeve with the illusionary comparisons between 'now' and 'then'.

^^ this is dead on and going to happen . And Once the world reserve currency is no longer the dollar , then the fed . can no longer print money out of thin air. Which is the only thing keeping it going now . Total Collapse is inevitable and WILL happen . The only question is , will it be a controlled descent or total bottom out drop collapse ? We should of never left the gold standard for an oil backed economy , or paper money . Or had a centralized bank to turn over to the federal reserve . And when the dollar goes , so to will our oil monopoly .

While I think every generation to some degree post ww2 has had their share of materialistic people who feel entitled and live way beyond their means from credit . I don't think it's fair to blame this generation who are and act as they were taught by previous generations . Yet I do believe the self centered selfish mentality is increasing , maybe because there are just so many people now compared to other generations of the 40s . We have doubled the population since then .

In my initial response I had no idea who Jean Twinger was, and since then I discovered that it was San Diego State University Professor Jean Twinge's opinion we were being asked if we agreed with.
Do I agree with her? No, not at all. The human species is the most diverse life form to have evolved prolifically on our planet. Generations cannot be defined with precision, so we often look for traits we can present to a portion of the society as undesirable as a means of labeling them. With population increasing each day, resulting from both new births and increased life expectancy resulting from science and technology it is quite easy to find an abundance of things to complain about as it is a small minority of the population that bring about these changes which a majority, if not all the population wishes to benefit from. In general, most everyone benefits to some degree in the long run, only some more quickly and completely than others. This is natural and has not changed since the first generation of the human species from which we have all descended.
Sometimes it appears to me that a growing number of people are being led to believe that they are 'owed' a living by those who 'earn' a living.

It's going to end soon, I reckon. I'm fed up of it myself. I'm 19 and I grew up around it.

The teens in the 60's were fed up of 50's materialism? Uhuh, look at today. That was nothing compared to the egotistical and commercial nonsense around right now. There's a revolution brewing though I tell you. The wars are escalating, prices rising, the dollar is on the verge of collapse, we've got those like Ron Paul speaking out and tuning more and more people into the truth, we've got Occupy Wall Street and Anonymous. Yes people are being silenced, but they can't silence us all.

And we've learned from the mistakes of the 60's in terms of drug use. We know the difference between cannabis and psychedelics versus hard drugs. We know about mindset and setting and not to overdo it. Even new psychedelic bands have started to become really popular and so are TV shows, including cartoons (Adventure Time for instance), littered with psychedelic references. The cannabis movement has also hugely grown. Despite the media's materialist clowns getting in on the act, there's still a lot of factual information getting out. The show "Weed Wars" was a huge step in the right direction. Not to mention documentaries.

This time the movement is brewing much more slowly compared to the 60's from what I know about history, but I tell you the bubble will burst. I was actually very surprised to see the number of teens on this site. Youth movement here we come! haha ;) All we have to do is unite.
