watching plenty of Canadian tv shows. and Ive noticed they say "I apologize for that".. Is this true or does it depend on the circumstance.

    Yes.

Do Americans not say this? They always seem surprised when I apologise to them.

I think it mostly depends on the circumstances. I've met a lot of people from the west/east coasts of Canada, and the people from those provinces certainly have a different vocabulary, and way of talking.

I've been told that I speak like an American by Canadians from B.C or Newfoundland... People from B.C always seem so relaxed when they're talking, whereas the people from Newfoundland just don't many god damn sense... Don't even get me started on the people from Quebec.

I live in Southern Ontario though, so we're pretty "Americanized"... There's actually a good portion of America that's actually more northern than the part of Canada where I live... I guess I'm just not Canadian enough... And for that I apologize.

This is why no one likes Southern Ontario.

Ive never really heard an American say " I apologize for that".. Its "Oh sorry", or Im sorry, my bad". Never "I apologize for that"..

I was at a Shane Koyczan show last night. He had a poem about animal groupings...a pride of lions, a murder of crows, an apology of canadians....

In Texas we say "Pardon me ma'am." while lifting up the brim of our hats.

If it is a casual situation and with people I know it is more likely to be I am sorry.

In a formal situation it would be I apologize.
