I like to think i know quite a bit about computers, but i'm having an insanely difficult time choosing the best for me. I'd really appreciate some help from anyone who knows a lot about computers :D

I'll just list off some things i really want/need in a computer, then if anyone could suggest whats best for me that'd be great!

I'm looking more towards a laptop, but i'd take getting a desktop into consideration. And i have no specific favorite company, except i dislike Acer.

    Okay, what i'm looking for:

    • a lot of memory and GB - i have an insane amount of music and movies on my current laptop and it's been full for ages, i'd prefer 1TB or more storage at least.
    • I'd like it to be fairly fast with plenty of RAM, i hate having to wait for programs/internet to start up when it's taking forever.
    • I play a lot of games, so i'd prefer it have gaming capabilities, my current laptop sucks with games and i lag like crazy.
    • Pricing isn't a huge issue, but i'd rather it not be overly expensive, hopefully under $1,000 for sure.
    • good graphic card
    • fully up to date i know how fast computers can get outdated, i want the latest stuff in it already so i wont have to worry about updating anytime soon.

That's pretty much it i guess, i just want it to be really fast, with a lot of memory, and a good graphic card so i can game. If there's a pre-build decent laptop/or possibly desktop that fits this description that'd be awesome.

You had best think Desktop.... A laptop is too limiting. Also, any laptop the even comes close to those specs would be over $1000. Why not build your own desktop system?

I agree with Tyrsonwood, unless you want to spend over $1500 on a laptop, desktop would be the way to go.
I also agree with the idea of building your own system if you are comfortable doing that kind of thing. That way you get the specific components you want in the configuration you want. If you are considering that I recommend checking out Newegg.com, they have about the best prices online with plenty of end user reviews on every component.

If you want to stick with a name brand, Dell has the best record of reliability out of all the name brands out there. After almost 20 years building/repairing systems I can attest to that, Dell's last. That opinion is based on having dealt with literally thousands of computers over the years, both home and business.

Personally I feel the best, most cost effective way to go is to build it yourself if your going for a desktop.

Also don't spend the $$$ on the latest and greatest bleeding edge tech, not needed.

    My recommendation for DIY:

    Motherboard
Get either a Gigabyte or an Asus board, they have the best track record of reliability.
You want a Z68 chipset, that will get you DDR3 Ram capability, SATA 6gs, USB 3.0, PCI Express 2.0, etc, etc. basically will fit the bill and then some.
Also go for one with an 1156 socket that will accept an I3, I5 or I7 processor, affording you even more wiggle room price wise and for future upgrades. There are newer socket types out there, but only for the I7 processor, and I don't think you want to spend your entire budget on just the cpu. Go with an 1156 socket board and an I5 cpu, then when you can afford to, pop an newer I7 in there. ;)

for RAM I recommend either G.Skill, Corsair or Crucial. Those brands are pretty consistently ranked well with G.Skill being the best $$$ wise.

    Video Cards
I personally prefer Nvidia, but really don't see much difference between them and ATI as far as the end result is concerned, although Nvidia does often get the edge in some applications/games.

    Harddrive
Western Digital, Black series, no question. Most reliable hard drives on the market right now, hands down. Price is going to be a bitch though. Floods in Asia last year took out a LOT of manufacturing plants that made the drive controller components and as a result hard drive prices and availability took a major hit. It's slowly getting back too where it was before, but prices are still high.

If you want name brand, again I recommend Dell and you can customize the systems too suit your needs on their website.

    Hope that helps :)

p.s. if sounds too good to be true, it is. With computers you do get what you pay for.

You should build a desktop. If you don't know how to build a computer, you can just buy the parts and pay someone to do it for you. It would only cost around $50 for them to put it together. If you go to a local computer place they would be happy to help you pick out parts. Just stay away from places like bestbuy and future shop.

If you just want to buy something that's ready to go here's a nice gaming PC.

Yeah, that's a fairly nice off-the-shelf rig, power supply could be bigger though, but it would fit the OP's needs nicely I imagine.

dell is shit. they use the cheapest parts, theyre absolutely worthless.
and theres plenty of power in today laptops if you got a grand to spend, but if you choose a desktop you could spend only a couple hundred on parts and build something insanely powerful.

    Dell just bought Alienware?

Yeah like 6 years ago

Starting in 2002, Dell considered buying Alienware, but did not take any action until March 22, 2006, when it agreed to purchase the company. The new subsidiary maintained its autonomy in terms of design and marketing. However, Alienware's access to Dell's supply chain, purchasing power, and economies of scale would lower its operating costs.
Initially, Dell maintained its competing XPS line of gaming PCs, often selling computers with the same specifications. The XPS line may have hurt Alienware's market share within its market segment. Due to corporate restructuring in the spring of 2008, the XPS brand was scaled down.Product development of gaming PCs was consolidated with Dell's gaming division, with Alienware becoming Dell's premier gaming brand. On June 2, 2009, The M17x was introduced as the First Alienware/Dell branded system. Alienware now represents the premium performance space in Dell’s consumer family of products.

Well jared, my opinion is based on well over 15 years working off and on in the industry. We are talking everything from fixing a friends pc to setting up networks with over 100 workstations. Sorry, but over the years it has become very clear that Dell by far has better reliability than say HP, who actually have the WORST record of any company. Can't even begin to tell you how many HP systems went right into the dumpster to be replaced by Dell.

Now I did look up some stats the other night out of curiosity and one of the articles I read did say that Dell had more service calls than any other company for the year in question (2010), BUT what the article failed to mention is that Dell also had the biggest market share for the same period of time.

Simply put, Dell had more service calls because they sold a shit ton more systems than any competitor.
There is a reason for them having the highest market share.

Actually when you recommended HP, I knew right away you don't have a clue what your talking about.

So OP, don't listen to jaredfelix, he has no idea what he's talking about. ;)

Now after some further reading I will acquiesce on one point about Dell, their customer service and customer service related issues, warranties, call centers, have taken a nosedive in the last 2 years.
But speaking from personal experience spanning years I feel Dell has better reliability as far as the hardware components are concerned.
One problem I noticed is it's really hard to find reports on this shit that only focus on the hardware and not customer service issues. But that's to be expected when dealing with companies that have non-technical people as their market base, they are going to lump any and all problems together.
A friend of mine is a Novell CNE/CNA and a Windows Small Business Server Certified tech and has been a Dell authorized reseller for going on 6-7 years now, and his service records (he does the install/maintainence and service himself) support what I'm saying.
So that is info that isn't tainted by having to be on hold for ever and than having to talk to Ali Baba while he shits in the Ganges.

And as with everything, you get what you pay for no matter who you buy it from.

OP, build your own system, that's the best way to go.
