transposing music for another instrument

    Ha, I feel so smug right now...I just sight read a piece of music for viola and, knowing that it's 1/4 lower than a violin, I transposed it for guitar as I went. :)

    Sorry, but I had to share that...I'm sure I'll do something soon enough that will make me feel not so smart! :tongue:

    I've transposed violin to bagpipes.

    I really should get back to the pipes. I need an instrument back in my life.

    the Viola is tuned a 5th below the Violin.

    What interval is "1/4"? Do you mean "a perfect fourth"? That would make sense, I guess, since guitars and viol-family instruments are spaced at perfect fourths, but, I believe (and correct me if I am wrong), violin-family instruments have string spacing of a perfect fifth.

    It is a good exercise for getting your intervals in your head so that you know the result without having to think it out. After a little practice, you just can know what they are automatically.

    In university i transposed a chopin mazurka for guitar... tarrega has many chopin transcritpions, too, as well as transcriptions for guitar of music by mozart, brahms, mendehlsson, beethoven, haydn, and verdi
