Putting aside spelling, punctuation and grammar, how do you define quality writing?

    Opinion :)

IMO good stuff has gotta be fairly to the point but not simple. No point in waffling..
Good descriptive imagery really gets me going, and the whole things gotta flow nicely. A good storyline helps, but I've read some amazing passages that don't actually have a story - just describing a scene. I <3 description :p
Also gotta be able to relate to a story emotionally in some way, always makes it better

If I can see it in my mind it's quality writing. I might or might not like it, but opinions don't judge quality.

You know it when you read it.

Whats good or bad writing? It's a subjective thing, my boyfriends parents final split was over one thought the others favorite author was an idiot... At the end of the day, like most things we experience in life, if it makes your spirit soar, its a good thing.

action oriented (meaning you don't tell us who the characters are you show us)
brief and succinct (shows you have a control on the way to relate the information)
no redundancy b/c you think it adds flavor (ie. very rare, extremely large, a brief minute)
when you use too many words it shows you're not confident
lastly, voice, if you have nothing unique in your material or how you view that material, why should I read you instead of one of the thousand writers just like you?

It depends on the format. A novel or a screenplay?-- and even than, what's the genre? A Romance Novel doesn't meet the same standard of Quality that a non-fiction book does, or a comic book, or... you get the point.

But if I had to answer, I'd say the standard is "concise". Or perhaps, "pertinent".

I think quality writing is all in the voice that is given by the writer. I like a decent amount of change in vocabulary. Mostly good if it has a vibe that I can easily flow with. Being unique is always a good thing too. :p

voice. Its not that difficult to be a decent writer, as long as you have a good vocabulary and know how to make words flow together. But to be a great writer, you have to have your own voice. Your style has to stand out.

Everyone's right, its all about opinion and personal taste.

If a piece of writing is interesting and intriguing, then it must be well written.

But even if you don't find it to be the most interesting thing, it still can be well written. It just may be a well written piece of writing on a topic that you don't enjoy.
