I'm not sure if this is in the right section or not... Other drugs... I guess? Anyways, I quit smoking pot, for a drug test, and I've been having a rough time getting to sleep, and eating... The eating is getting better, forcing myself to eat bigger meals, and I'm eating healthier than I used to.. So that's a plus!

But sleep... Sleep is so freaking hard.. some nights I'll lay in bed for 3 hours + (I know this because once I really get fed up, I get up and get a drink of water... and check the time..) trying to fall asleep... Then before I know it, it's light outside and I feel like I haven't slept.. So today I bought some Melatonin, as many people told me to try it out.

BUT... Me being stupid, I tought I could figure it out on my own.. I bought 5mg pills.. With the research I've done.. You should start at .3 mg, and work your way up.. 5mg is far from .3.. Is it dangerous to take one full pill? Should I split it in two? Maybe 4?

Thank you for your help !

nah man they are pretty natural and healthy too! i dont think you can everdose nor think its to bad for the liver. you could pop 2 pills to see if it knocks you out. some people report strange dreams. but scientists have claimed longevity with melatonin O:

I have a very high tolerance level, and what I looked up online said actually 10 mg of melatonin. I take 3 a night...and can't really tell it when I take it; but I can tell when I don't. I think the only melatonins I could find are 3mg.

All that being said...take one whole pill. It's not going to hurt you. But try that several nights to a week, and see what, if any, effect that has. A lot of ppl say that melatonin helps them to sleep.

I can definitely feel the effects of melatonin. I generally get tired enough to fall asleep around 12-1, but if i take one or two melatonin any number of hours before that I feel physically tired enough to fall asleep within a couple hours. I don't think .3 mg is the correct dose. One 5 mg pill should work fine.

You can find melatonin in 1, 3, 5, and 10 mg pills and in regular, melt in your mouth and time release. Melatonin is extremely safe.. your chances of overdosing on it are so small. I've built up a huge tolerance and even took 150mg of it one night and woke up fine and with no problems. Just start small, stay small and only take it when absolutely necessary.

Split the 5mg pill into quarters, personally i find smaller doses around .5mg to 1mg are much more effective than larger doses.

It is very safe, and next to impossible to OD on. Keep in mind melatonin is something your brain produces naturally when you sleep (but only in full darkness). I take it quite regularly because I work the night shift, and must sleep during the day. I have some melatonin pills here that are 10mg. I find these large doses not to work any better than the smaller doses. In fact, some studies suggest that lower doses work better, because relatively little is needed for sleep. The person above alluded to this.

As for its effectiveness, it seems to vary. Some days it works, other days not so much. One thing I have found, at least for myself, is that melatonin is best taken several hours before you go to bed. Some evidence has found that initially melatonin actually impairs sleep. There are times when I have taken melatonin where I don't start to get a really restful sleep until many hours after I went to bed. Many times I am quite restless and am in sort of a half-sleep state while using melatonin, then for the second half of my sleep I sleep very well.

I work swing shift so I have no idea what a normal sleep pattern is. When I switch from midnights to the day shift 2 ten mg tabs do me wonderfully. The smaller doses didn't work for me. Guess thats why you need to experiment.
