Tommy Jordan of South Carolina apparently is the new Internet Hero of disgruntled parents everywhere since he took revenge on his daughter for making ungraceful remarks on how her parents, to her mind, treated her like a slave with numerous chores she was assigned at home...some of her assignments included gathering manure for the family garden and "keeping her parents coffeecups continually filled"...hopefully not both at the same time.

Her remarks were placed in a secure area of her Facebook page, which her father, and IT professional, HACKED (he says he was "upgrading her computer") in order to read her complaints she thought she had confessed to friends in a private venue...among her secrets was a profane rant on how her parents "kept her like a slave" and had previously grounded her for three months for uttering similar complaints to their faces.

Having hacked her computer and read what was an equivalent of her private diary, the angry father decided to show his daughter who was boss, by taking a .45 pistol, and after reading a rant of his own (closed with a cryptic "You think things have been hard for you...you're about to see how hard I can make them for you") he then took a .45 pistol and blasted her laptop with nine bullets.

I was amazed to see this man, for the most part, is being treated like a hero, and far right wing websites have even half jokingly proposed drafting him for president. On other chat sites I have found some people who think his actions were questionable at best, but the majority, particularly on more conservative sites, have shown overwhelming vitriol and almost a maniacal feeding frenzy of lauding this man for his rather twisted ideas about parenting, almost as though finally one parent is taking revenge on these children who messed up their lives...big testament for the rights often trumeted "family values".

Huffington Post has been giving it even handed play, but the more "right" the website, the more they deify this father who believes his children should slave and not be heard...and when his control is threatened, his first instinct is to reach for his gun.

Am I horribly wrong in my view of this "hero", whom I see as no hero at all? Is this what manhood and being a father has become?

    Straighten me out.

No, he's just being an asshole and wasting money. It's been a teenage thing since the beginning of time to be petty and catty and resentful, and that guy needs to be punched in the nuts for invading his kids privacy and destroying the computer that he probably wasted the money on to buy for her

What the guy read in the video was actually the daughter's rant which she had posted to her facebook 'wall' -- hardly a private diary.

My guess is that the daughter's a spoiled brat who has probably been given most everything she wanted and has little or no respect (or even consideration) for any sacrifice her parents may have made so that she could have the latest and greatest of everything.

I'm also guessing that her dad's one of those guys who, until lately, left most 'parenting' to the television, a laptop, iPod... Now that the kid's at an age where she could get into some real difficulties and nearing adulthood, he's expecting to flip a switch and make her a responsible individual. Bzzzzzzzzzzz. Wrong. It ain't gonna happen.

"Privacy" for a 15 year old girl can be a very dangerous thing -- it's a fine line and a difficult point for parents.

BTW, I did something similar with a television and a .357 about 20 years ago -- I was able to bag that sucker with just a single shot. :D

    Links would've been helpful.

After watching the video; I certainly can't say that he is a hero -- it is a good video, and a good owning -- but he's the one that spoiled her in the first place.

Also; much exaggeration in OP. Your claims are even worse than Hannah Jordan's.

    This is so last week.

Anyway, I don't particularly see anything wrong with the guy shooting her laptop. I just think it's stupid, because she needed it for school and he'll probably end up buying her a new one anyway. Plus it just seems like such an attention whore thing to do. These types of things get old after a while.

.45 ACP is a wise choice for a laptop.

Okay then, I guess the consensus is he's a hero. Never thought people would applaud using a gun to control your kids. Thanks for answering my question...adios

I'd say that was over the top. Wouldn't a reasonable father sit his daughter down and try to work out what is bothering her to get some harmony in the family. So if a kid is late for dinner and comes riding up on his bike--you shoot the shit out of his bike? Better ways to communicate,as far as I'm concerned. The only thing she learned is that her dad is a dangerous hot-head.

The guy is a total idiot and comes from the "There! I fixed it" school of child rearing.

I view children and especially teenagers as independent beings not only capable of but having every right to their own thoughts and feelings.

This father appearantly does not belong to the same school of thought.

I don't fault him for teaching her a good work ethic, but I do fault him for acting like an asshole when she resents him for it. She's a teenager, its her job to resent him. Its natural for her to vent her feelings to her friends. Unfortunately, facebook is the new venting medium but its not much different from calling her friends on the phone.

He should have just rode it out a few years; she would be thanking him for teaching her the value of hard work in a few more years.
