I haven't Hitched a ride since the late 70s. It was cautionary, but usually ok. I met some cool people and only 2 creeps. I wouldn't pick anyone up these days. Aside from the psycho's; there are a lot of people who have become desperate, sad but true.
That's not the hitcher, this is the Hitcher: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3NvgBDTCLPk"]The Hitcher - YouTube
It's can be pretty easily verifiable. Murder rates in 1960: 5.1 per 100,000 2010: 4.8 per 100,000 The crime rates did spike in the 90's, and part of that was better reporting of domestic violence and part of is a legitimate upswing due to gentrification sort of ghetto creating effects, crack and meths effect on communities, a number of other factors...
if you lived where I live, I doubt you'd pick anyone up. when I see people walking through the streets, instead of stopping I lock the doors. maybe I'd have different mentality if I didn't live in the ghetto lol. but to be fair... there are a lot of suburbs around here that are 'nice' and if I saw someone who looked like they needed a ride, I'd pull over and see what's up. especially if I'm with someone alone, I'd feel more comfortable picking up a hitch hiker who was either female, over 70, or younger than me... lol
right before this happened, greyhound in canada started an ad campaign with a slogan of 'there's a reason you've never heard of bus rage' or something like that. they pulled those ads pretty quickly, lol.
That's what Marco Polo said. Interestingly he was arrested upon returning to Italy after 25 years of traveling.
Riding on the Greyhound across the country was definitely one of the most terrifying events of my life. But honestly I was more afraid of a lot of the drivers I had than I was of the passengers.
Back in the 70,s I hitched from Sante,Fe NM - to Boston Ma- -Took about 4 days and about a dozen rides- -Mostly a great experience* * * - Now I very rarely even see anyone hitchhiking. Maybe out west or upstate NY- but over here in S.Jersey I dont think Ive seen a hitcher in yrs- Unless they are standing next to a broken down vehicle
