I have heard it said that the best view of Melbourne is what you see in the rear view mirror heading north on the Hume Freeway. The same analogy could applied to other big cities. I personally prefer to live in the country and make the occasional visit to the big city.

So what are the redeeming features of the big city? I list art galleries, better bookshops new and second hand, some nice places to eat at, theatres and art house cinemas. I am inclined to think that many city people are caught up in such a competitive frenzy that the overlook the better features of the big city.

Cities, especially big ones, have their place. In the best of my worlds, those places are at least an hour or two away.

But they're worth the occasional visit to catch a concert, or show, or have a meal that doesn't start with "Mc."

Redeeming features of the big city?

A vastly greater selection of potential Lovers. Intelligence, education, wisdom, acumen, professionalism, master levels of skills, enlightenment, sophistication, intellectualism, brilliance, and self improvement. Love. Flush toilets.

Culture, arts, human interaction. Friends. Activity. Active lifestyles. Not rusting away.

But it all depends on the city.
San Francisco, Paris, New York. This applies to only the best.

Otherwise you are wasting your time there.

I lived in St. Louis, Missouri for a year and there were all kinds of things I liked about it. The biggest thing I liked was there was this part of town called University City where there was all kinds of record shops, art galleries, eco friendly stores and vegetarian restaurants. Every weekend they had an all afternoon drum circle and people selling hip arts and crafts. I wasn't old enough to fully enjoy it, but the fact that everything stays open all night is nice for people like me. I wasn't of drinking age while I lived there or I would have taken advantage of a lot of concerts that were always happening. Chick Berry played at his restaurant every month, and had other good acts there during the week. The historical value of old cities intrigued me too. STL had a bit of a bloody and racist past but it was still exciting to learn about. I don't think I would move to a big city again, but they are nice to visit!

The best thing about a big city is all the facilities that are within walking or transit commuting distance. If you have to drive everywhere, there is no advantage to being in a city.

I would never live in the Burbs. Burbs are "Slow Death".

All of you should run for your F___ing lives. If you live in the Burbs.

cities have stores that sell film and typewriter ribbons, and plow their sidewalks regularly.

it is also more fun to play your music in a city, if you don't get run off.

but cities should be taken in small dosages, if a person has sense.
