He seems to really be over looked in this forum and was curious about your thoughts on this great writer..?
I love Steinbeck's stories. I really like his imagery, it's simple but really beautiful. I also like how descriptive he is about the landscape and scenery. You can tell that he really appreciated the scenery of the south-west US at the time. His characters often have a lot of humility.
I've read Of Mice and Men and the Grapes of Wrath and both are two of my favorite books. Of Mice and Men grabbed me from the first page the very first time I read it. I love the characters in that book and I love the pictures he paints with his words. The Grapes of Wrath I think is one of the most powerful pieces of literature ever written. I bought East of Eden a couple of years ago and it is in my pile of Books-to-read. That pile keeps growing so I'm not sure when I'll finally get around to reading it.
Totally agreed. He has an uncanny way of bringing characters to life and exposing the deep relations between an individual and various forms..such as society, government, etc. Especially love. His imagery is flawless, a great American writer and a master of short stories. EDIT: Was directed towards lunarverse.
Both great books, and I agree... The Grapes of Wrath is one of the greatest pieces of American Literature.
Put that at the top of your "to read" list. It's a fantastic story. "The Pearl" is also great. Whenever you get the time read this short story of his if you'd like, I'd be interested to hear what you think of it. It's different than a lot of his other work, especially the main character. It's an odd, bleak story, I'm still not really sure what to think of it. http://fictiondaze.blogspot.com/2004/06/flight.html
Will read and post thought by tomorrow afternoon, thanks for the link. Also, The Pearl is an amazing story.
I'm currently reading another book, but when I'm done it I'm going to read "Sweet Thursday". I found a smelly old copy at the flea market, I had never heard of it before.
The stories of Steinbeck's are really awesome to go about and read. Seem to enjoy these books quite a lot as to what all on the topics he goes for and writing them on.
John Steinbeck is one of the greats. A very soulful writer. The Grapes Of Wrath is so beautifully written and so sad. The struggles of life at the bottom of the economic ladder.
much better than fitzgerald and hemingway, not as good as faulkner imho last read: travels with charley
I read East of Eden, and just started on Grapes of Wrath, which I hope to finish by spring. I'm reading it in English, not in Romanian as I did with East..., so I'll probably need to pay even more attention.
I highly recommend "East of Eden". He's a phenomenal writing with an uncanny ability to capture the human condition to it's core.
