Something that i living in the UK notice, that makes hippies stand out from "goths", "skaters", "indies" is that hippies usually don't mind being called or referring to themselves as hippies. It seems to be the only label that anyone can get away with calling themselves without looking like a bit of a boob.

BTW, i don't refer to people that look gothic as "goths" or label anyone according to the way i see them, i just used those labels as an example.

I love being labelled a hippie by people, maybe a true hippie accepts and is proud to be a hippie!
    Right the fuck on :)

Sad to say Hippies (or hipsters) are long gone although the attitude still exist. The dynamic which created the Hippies were born out from the Vietnam draft resistance, Height Ashbury, Grateful Dead, Timothy Leary, Allen Ginsberg, Ram Dass and Abey Hoffman just to say a few. The times were right after the Beat Generation, beatniks being of the Jack Kerouac "On the road", hitchhiking with no final place in mind. A hippie was Ken Kesley Merry Pranksters, traveling sub-couture's of the west coast academia and the east coast academia. It was really about the freedom of what you believed, giving you a choice in your destiny.

If you study Height Ashbury, the hippie generation was a lot of homeless kids living on the street doing a lot of drugs often being exploited. Its the commercial side we are all aware of. A lot of good came out of the time. Our concerns for the environment, our political awareness, health, relax dress, spiritual enlightenment and a break down of age groups are just a few society changes that make it a lasting impression and an important cultural change.
