    King James Version (KJV)
    Numbers 31

1And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
2Avenge the children of Israel of the Midianites: afterward shalt thou be gathered unto thy people.
3And Moses spake unto the people, saying, Arm some of yourselves unto the war, and let them go against the Midianites, and avenge the LORD of Midian.
4Of every tribe a thousand, throughout all the tribes of Israel, shall ye send to the war.
5So there were delivered out of the thousands of Israel, a thousand of every tribe, twelve thousand armed for war.
6And Moses sent them to the war, a thousand of every tribe, them and Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, to the war, with the holy instruments, and the trumpets to blow in his hand.
7And they warred against the Midianites, as the LORD commanded Moses; and they slew all the males.
8And they slew the kings of Midian, beside the rest of them that were slain; namely, Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, five kings of Midian: Balaam also the son of Beor they slew with the sword.
9And the children of Israel took all the women of Midian captives, and their little ones, and took the spoil of all their cattle, and all their flocks, and all their goods.
10And they burnt all their cities wherein they dwelt, and all their goodly castles, with fire.
11And they took all the spoil, and all the prey, both of men and of beasts.
12And they brought the captives, and the prey, and the spoil, unto Moses, and Eleazar the priest, and unto the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the camp at the plains of Moab, which are by Jordan near Jericho.
13And Moses, and Eleazar the priest, and all the princes of the congregation, went forth to meet them without the camp.
14And Moses was wroth with the officers of the host, with the captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, which came from the battle.
15And Moses said unto them, Have ye saved all the women alive?
16Behold, these caused the children of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam, to commit trespass against the LORD in the matter of Peor, and there was a plague among the congregation of the LORD.
17Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him.

18But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves.

So, he told his army to kill their mothers, fathers, brothers, little brothers, older sisters, aunts, uncles, etc etc, and to keep them for their selves as brides or concubines or something. Its creepy that its framed in such a sexualized context. Also remember that a child in that culture was anyone who hadn't reached the age of 13. Past 13, you were considered an adult.

The more things change ,the more they remain the same.

Well, he's seen as a divine prophet or patriarch, but he told his soldiers to massacre entire families and keep all the "women children" for God knows what.

I don't like Muhammad either, because he married a 9 year old girl. He also killed lots of people as well.

Well we know that patriarchy is sexist in certain contexts. The patriarchal vision is a human vision, a human social structure. We also know that cultural identity is always blessed by god, or good is on our side.

Yah, its really bullshit. Your ways aren't good just because some guy in an official looking set of robes and official sounding status told you so. Good stands on its own, and you get its blessing by gravitating toward it, not blindly following a cultural directive.

Things might seem good, too, that really aren't. Like having diamonds might seem great, but when you realize that it was acquired by a large firm through guerrillas in Sub-saharan Africa, its an evil. Raiding some close by village and taking all their stuff might seem great to you at the moment, but you're participating in an endless cycle of death and destruction that will eventually come back to you. Real Good benefits but doesn't harm.

So what exactly is your point? This isn't the most shocking thing in the Bible. Are you just now realizing all this? And before you blah blah blah about all the evils religion has done, do you really think people will just suddenly throw away their desire for power and treat everyone equally if we somehow got rid of religion? The problem is with people--religion is just an attempt at an excuse that would be replaced with another attempt at an excuse if it didn't exist.

Religion did a lot of good as well so that's probably not his point.

I just think its good people know this. I didn't know it. I know it means different things to different people and that individuals filter their beliefs through their personalities. I'm not one to go around bashing people for their religion. However, its good people know what they're ignoring.
