Unreasonable hate. It will even out just fine. Some of the market goes to e-books, some stays with the 'analog' books.

It's not like paper books are becoming obsolete or something.

Personally I like to hold a book, turn the paper pages, smell the ink,
    I get a good feeling.

The E-book is also good, when one is trying to obtain a hard-to get copy.
So I don't think one will replace the other, they are both good and necessary.

    It's good to have diversity.

Exactly, you're not getting plasticized at all. Most disliked products can be ignored if you want to.

I def think they will kill the book.... just look at barnes and noble and all the other major book sellers going out of business.

I love my kindle and my wife really loves that I am no longer buying paper books because I already have 4 book shelves sacking under the weight of hundreds of pounds of books I can't bear to part with. Now when I buy a book it doesn't take up more space in our cramped apartment. The problem is many hippie books are not on kindle yet

I spend more than my share of time on comp doing one thing or another. I also read a lot of books. They are two totally different pastimes that I keep seperate. I read most of the time laying back in bed, and it's a nice break from the computer and other things. I can't see books ever becoming obsolete. I think it would be a shame (almost a crime) if we did'nt have libraries public or private to enjoy. They are wonderful things to give and receive. Some of the best presents I have received have been books. I could'nt imagine reading my grandson an ebook at bed time...some how that would just be wrong. :)

Yes, but your PC, Kindle and otehr gadgets are all ELECTRICITY based.
If there is a blackout, and electricity leaves you for a couple of days. Wouldn't you like to have a paper book with you in those times? While reading with a candle or flashlight at hand.
I have nothing against the book going digital. But it is good to leave the paper book available if you want it ,or need it. Don't you think?

I hope that they do not, for two reasons. I don't agree with further technological advancement that makes us stay inside even longer and become further apart (physically), and two, I work at a dang library! That's my job! I also wouldn't be surprised if they do take over.

My kindle battery lasts for a month and I routinely charge it with my solar charging station.

I have 400+ books in the palm of my hand at all times and I can borrow digital books from my local library or my Amazon Prime account anytime I want to read a book I don't already have....... any book I want I can have in my hand in 60 seconds or less. No ordering it and waiting for it to come in the mail, no having to go to a book store only to find out they don't have it and will have to order it in special for me and I can pick it up next week.

While typing this post I just borrowed Andrew Weil's book "From Morphine to Chocolate" (a great hippy book) from Amazon.com (it took under a minute).

The only people that still read their books or magazines or newspaper on paper are the older generation or people that haven't caught on yet. Everyone is going digital because they don't have a choice.... there is more money to be made and less work involved with a digital book.... no printing, no shipping.....this is why almost half of all books purchased from amazon are digital now.

Well, if being better for everyone economic wise, Looks like it will all end in that being digital, if people's tastes change.
What about Public paper books libraries? will they vanish in time?
Personally I like paper books, and digital books also, I see no need to choose.

We can't let e-books kill books! I love books and I'd hate to see em go! But there are so many people who actually read real ones, so I really don't think they're going anywhere.
I like hanging out in bookstores and reading for hours. I also like holding a real book in my hand and turning real pages. I cant stand the thought of reading a screen for three hours. E-books just seem lazy to me. Just another technology to ruin social interaction. Because people will become to lazy to get up and go to the bookstore or the cafe. Cool places where you can talk to others about books. Or anything else for that matter.
I will always support the book.

Yea, and God forbid, but if something would happen to the power grid (like big solar storms) you aren't going to have a book to read. Because when that battery dies thats it. You'll also eventually loose all your other great technology. That is the big problem I see with things like e books.

Wow, I was just thinking about this. Yeah I really hope it doesn't happen, but you make a good point. Technology may be convenient, but it has its limits and people depend WAAAYY too much on it. E-books are just a fad right now, though, in my opinion.

If the power grid was wiped out I think I would have bigger problems then what to read like trying to keep all my food in my fridge and freezer from rotting, fending of the roaming bands of mad max like desert pirates and how to get to work.

You sir don't live in reality.

Barnes and noble is shutting down all their stores and all other book stores are hurting badly. This is not a fad.

It may conquer a part of the market (seems out of the question really) but it stops right there. The disadvantages of buying the device, the thing depending on electronics and the plain old matter of question and demand will keep paper books in the market as well. Lots of people like this e-books but a lot also don't. And of course there's a difference between paper magazines and newspapers and real books. I for one encourage the daily newspapers to go completely digital, but certainly not the books.
