True, when WE were younger this was the case - indeed, terms such as 'wanker' & 'jerk-off' are still used in a derogatory manner, although not always with direct reference to the actual act of masturbation.

When I was young & Sex Education in schools was only just being introduced to schools, and even then only to those taking Biology (and even then, only with specific written parental permission) the whole subject of masturbation, although very briefly mentioned, typically by adding a phrase such as "boys will sometimes rub their penises in order to get a pleasureable feeling", but with no explanation of how or why they might do this - even though I had started masturbating by this age, I still found the teacher's description of rubbing the penis to be a bit of a mystery.

These days (at least in the UK) Sex Education is gradually introduced to children in Primary Schools so by that the time they reach Secondary School, when their bodies are actually beginning to change they already have a fair understanding of what it's all about. Then, when the whole subject of masturbation is introduced, not only is it emphasised that it is a perfectly normal & healthy activity, but often incorporates in depth descriptions of how to do it, including various recommended techniques.

While some 'Old Schoolers' may find such changes shocking, I see it as something that is well overdue. Ignorance of masturbation, and the natural instinctive urges towards it, has for far too long been the cause of guilt in kids going through pubescence. They should be made aware in advance that the pleasures to be reached through masturbation is just one part of growing up that they have to look forward to, and not something that they have to discover for themselves & resent themselves for doing so.
