I just wanted to share :sunny:

Hopefully the first of many more to come. From a silkie, hopefully the other (an appenzeller) will start laying soon, but it is younger.

Hey congrats!! We got our first egg just over a month ago, and are up to 4 a day now. We've got 7 hens here. They're all the same age, too, but they're of 4 different breeds. Also some just don't want to lay as much in winter so I'm wondering if they're just not going to start yet.

Did you eat the egg yet? Sooooo yummy!

Yes thats what I thought, because I hatched them from eggs late in the summer, I wasn't expecting them to lay this winter, and thought it would be spring before they we got eggs.

Now I have to decide how to cook it!

    lol... Decisions decisions...

I just ate two of them boiled for the first time. Delish! Our birds are completely free range, so their diet if very diverse.

i used to keep chooks as well, can't beat a fresh egg, although i used to keep them for a day or two before eating as a fresh laid egg always seemed to taste chalky, has anyone else noticed that?

Our chickens are so free range I must discover nests in the shrubbery.
If you do beat eggs, they taste like omelets.

Don't let the chickens catch you beating their eggs or it may be no more eggs for you! :)
