Hokey, Im the first to admit, I'm an absolute newb to dreads, but I thought I would post a few pics of my little dreadlings and get a few tips!

I dont have any pics of my hair pre-backcombed, but it was a bleached silvery colour just below the shoulders. This was a pic of me from about 2/3 months ago (it took ages to get the red out!)

These are my dreads, about 4 weeks old now

My boyfriend and I spent a day backcombing and palm rolling, and since then I have just been palm rolling every other day or so.

Tese are 3 tiny baby dread i made after I left too much of my fringe (bangs to USA folk) loose. They are a lot smaller than the rest of them, I was wondering if they will work out OK?

also, Im not a natural blonde...ahem... and my roots are looking really dark.

Does anybody think that I would be OK to bleach the roots?

Soo what do you think, going well or not so well??? Is there anything else i should be doing?

Allllso, Im currently 8 and a half months pregnant and shall soon be in hospital go have my first baby!! I was wondering if there are any tips as to keep short new dreads out of face, as I highly doubt I will have much patience with them through contractions and might be tempted by a pair of scissors!!

    Happy new year everyone!

palm rolling isnt necessary, it only rounds them out and knackers your arms! backcombed dreads will probs all fall out anyway over the next few months, but theyll knot up again beautifully.

the fringe dreads may fall out.. ive found it really hard to dread mine! but theyre getting there now. again, it takes a while.

when i first had mine i had a wide headband, really stretchy, that held them all back fine. you could use a scarf and tie it.

bleaching will be fine, im forever bleaching, lightening, dying, bleaching, dying a new colour.. while your dreads are young itll be fine but dont use conditioner. as they mature itll be okay to give them some conditioner lovin' :) (not that it does much but hey)

oh and if you should ever think it, lock peppa, wax, gunk or goo is generally bad, dont use 'em :)

congrats on both the dreads and the baby, if you get one of those big square scarfs (the ones that look like the talaban wear) and cut it in half you get two very good headbands that are the perfect size

Cheers, I made the decision to stay away from any kind of wax/lock products before I got them, as everywhere I looked people were saying "WAX IS BAD!".

I shall stop with the palm rolling, I'm not complaining as it tires my arms out

One other thing, I have been washing about once a week with some natural olive oil soap bars I brought back from Turkey. Seems to be doing the jobby but....its a bit of a stinker. Is there anything else readily available in the UK that would work and have less of a pong? I tend to mostly squeeze excess water out and keep a towel on, but it leaves loads of stray hairs flying around. Should I use a different technique or just let the stray hairs do their thing?

Your hair seems a bit short, so you may see some loosening or fall-out from the knots. No big deal.

    Also, palm rolling is pointless.

I wouldn't do it at this stage. I would wait a bit longer because they are only a month along. Bleach will make your hair slippery and the knots may loosen.

I am willing to embrace the falling out and loosening all as part of the process :) and have decided to give up on the palm rolling. I really want them to do their own thing. Might wait a bit longer for the bleaching, I may struggle with this as I am a self confessed dying addict!! My bathtub has been stained dozens of different colours...but I think Im happy with blonde and the dark root growth for the moment.
Shall be updating hopefully before the baby is born, or very soon after!

Definitely wait for the bleaching. I made that mistake a month ago, and I'm not even 3 months along, and it definitely hurt my dreads. :/

Just did my first ever bicarbonate of soda clean. OMG! My hair is very dry from it! :) But this is a good thing, right?

More fly away hairs than ever and everything seems to have loosened up alot.

Will I need to do any maintenance to keep them from coming too loose or matting together?
Also, I was wondering if dread wraps and beads are useful for the dreading process, or just cosmetic?

    Tar :)

i dont like bicarb washes. they loosen stuff. (imo)

wraps and things.. could be good for them to keep their shape, but they will change shape A LOT over the next few weeks, months. so yes, they are mainly cosmetic, but they do look purdy :)

I figured I would try it, I think the olive oil soap I have been using is a bit too oily tbh. Need to find another type of shampooey product me thinks :/

Loose hairs help your dreads a lot. The loose hairs will find their way into a dread and stuff. :) Also, the only maintenance I would recommend is ripping them apart every once in a while. Make sure that if you don't want them to grow together you do this from the root too.

** only arip a few at a time to:
    a) prevent pain
    b) not go overboard on ripping

Think my dreads are about 6 months old now and my son is nearly 4 months old! Been tempted to cut a few times but have persisted. Given up on palm rolling but have had to start ripping a little bit due to loose hairs deciding to join with the wrong dread. PAIN! (not as bad a labour, I can take it)

this pic was actually taken 2 1/2 months ago and have progressed quite a bit since :)

    WOOOOOOO, time has flown!!

Coming along swell for 4 months.

I thought the ripping was a little uncomfortable at first. Now it's my favorite. Especially if there really stuck together. That noise it makes!

Orrrrr, you could just not rip..??? Nothing wrong with some fatties.
