sleep on a mattress on the floor, it's much more comfortable than a box spring anyways

get rid of all the electric outlets and junk connected to them. Well maybe keep a puter to stay connected to real hippys. Then get a solar panel awning and hang it off your window. use that for your puter. Clean up your room and get rid of all chemicals and stuff made from un natural things as much as possible. Write some positive things on your walls that tell you not others what you need to be doing which is to get out of your room as much as possible and get out and clean the world and make it a better place. No need to hide stoned in a room from the poluted world real hippys go out and clean it up..

All of these things does not a hippie make. A Hippie is BORN not Made. It's what's inside that makes for a Hippie not what trinkets you have.

all the posts have some good ideas. black lights are cool, patchouli, incense holders, mattresses on the floor. Add a bong or hookah, but most of all: LET ANYONE WHO WANDERS IN OFF THE STREET CRASH IN YOUR PAD. That's what impressed me most of my time in SF; the people who weren't paranoid, but hospitable, and let me crash overnight. AND shared their stash with me!

A hippy pad should have multiple occupants, that way the pad is cared for when you disappear for a week and cant explain where youve been when you return.

You Just tell them , I needed to go up on the mountain for a few days, to see the world spinning round.

I'm younger, but here's an idea, and what I have done. I have a black light above my bed so sometimes I turn it on at night, and with the black light posters I have, my room looks great. Also, I have a lava lamp up, and have the glow-in-the-dark stars all around my room. I also have the stars in my kids' room, along with two different lava lamps. My kids' walls in their room are painted yellow, and they have scarves, and indian blankets hanging from their walls, and over their window. Just a few ideas.

I have a loft bed and a chinese dragon flag hung under it. I have a little corner for meditation with incense and stuff. I have some guitars, my fav to display is my Rickenbacker bass, its just gorgeous. Really just be artistic and use the space so the chi flows through your room...good vibes. Use everything together to form a beautiful picture, the colors esp.

the rickenbacker goes on the wall, thats for space and to keep the clumbsy hands of a friend from breaking a tuning peg, string, fretboard issues the usual.

get an old rotary dial phone, the ugly green kind (wall phone), hell use it, it not that bad
posters of hendrix at woodstock and joplin as well, glow in the dark black velvet of course, hell theres a cool wavy gravy poster to, if your not familiar with wavy gravy he is soley responsible for many lives being saved at woodstock,
abbby hoffman poster giving the world the finger is cool to
lockeroom or rush is a must if its still to be found, dont spend alot its fun about 2 times and the headaches a bitch.....fun?..hell yea!!!!
hang on od green military uniform from the vietnam era somewhere in the room, if nothing else i,ll feel better for that...lol
you cant live without a frisbee rolling tray....you,ll figure it out in short order, they bend in the middle also.

I'm not an "old hippie" but I'm a bit older than you I suspect, so here are some of the cool hippie things I've found that make good decorations:
Stuff from yard sales, thrift stores and such: You can find random awesome stuff! I have an aztec or mayan looking statue I think is pretty cool, I know people who find Buddha and Bodhi statues at those types of places, and stuff like that!

Posters, tapestries, pictures, all that cool stuff. Cool hippie bands of course. Artwork is really awesome too, especially if you made it!

You could make some patchwork or tie-dye curtains, if you are crafty. Come to think of it, that would look cool in my place too! :)

That is all standard stuff though. Just look around for stuff you like. Avoid buying it new, if you can. Re-purpose stuff, reuse things, you know, be green and non-consumerist. :) Stuff made from natural renewable fibers like hemp and bamboo are also a good thing to have!

Also, if you are a deadhead you could start collecting tapes and display them proudly on your wall as I do. :) Though I suppose tape-trading has died and all has went to Archive.org...

    I hope that helped!

Just live in it-a pad to sleep, a place for clothes, a place for books and a spot to read them. A window that lets fresh air in. Smoke lots of herb, drop acid, and the room will be yours

While I'm not old, always enjoyed making my own stuff to put in wherever I was staying. The whole drawing and painting constantly thing eventually gave me the urge to 'artify' pretty much anything I can.
Take some plain white sheets and dye them and whatnot for your bed, maybe sew or weave your own blanket and pillows, etc. Try and think outside the box as far as materials go. I've made a few sculptures of animals out of masking tape, and my friend made a carrying case for his cds out of sticky notes, scotch tape an and a couple old tshirts, for instance.

my room has colorful random stuff everywhere. my walls are grafittied. i have mismatched blankets and there is art everywhere too. a really cool idea is to make "can lanterns".
    1. get a can (vegetable can) and empty the contents, take off the wrapper, and fill with water.
2.place it in the freezer and let it sit over night.
3.get it out of the freezer and draw and outline of a picture. hearts or peacesigns are easy. something simple will do.
4.hold up a nail to the picture and hammer dots all the way around your picture. make sure there is a little space between each dot. the can should have the picture or pictures in dots now.
5.wipe off the outlined picture that you drew in the first place if its noticeable unless you want to paint the can.
6.let the whole thing defrost and dry out.
7.put a small candle in it and set it out where everywhere can see your lantern:D

if you need a picture let me know. its a really cool idea.
