Hi everybody I have been thinking about getting dreads for a long time now A lot of friends tels me to wait to it gets longer, its about 30cm long now and not healty at all. It have been growing for 2,5-3years and never been taking care of in that time. It's filled with knobs and hair going in 2pices in the end. I have been thinking about a mothod called hippie dreads where you don't put anything in the hair just not sure how to explain. But how to keep them, how to make them/ should i get a pro to do it, is it long enough of should I wait, what to do if there comes bugs in it, what are the bennefits and so on. I want to know everything about it before I start
Make sure you have a professional do your "hippie dreads", it sounds okay in theory but you really need years of expertise and several quarts of wax, or your hair simply won't work, especially if you're not black. Also, the split ends and other damage will be a serious problem, you need silky, split free hair if you ever want good dreadlocks. You'll have to cut out those parts and regrow, or they'll destroy your dreadlocks, the ends will unravel and destroy the whole thing. The splits destroy it by sucking in all the wax, so you can never keep enough in, and it's always running dry, and in the end you'll have to shave your head. Dreadlocks are a big commitment and require constant work and excellent hair care. You also may want to consider getting a salon membership, for weekly, or at LEAST monthly, waxing and tune-ups.
Hahahahaha this place always surprises me. Roor did an excellent job, but I would like to offer an alternative method. Step 1) wash your hair when it gets greasy. Step 2) do nothing besides wait. And then repeat. And then post some pictures. And then cook me dinner.
Why are the old members here so sarcastic and off-putting to newcomers? They're not going to understand your weird dread jokes either. Why do you guys expect everyone to know as much as you do about dreads? if you guys were more inviting maybe there would be more activity on this board like dreadlockssite.
Because At The Top Of Teh Dready Page In The Stickies It Clearly States, "Read This Or Risk Being Flamed", In Other Words, Read The Instructions Before Posting.... Cheers Glen.
ehhh poor excuse. why would anyone who's not familiar with using forums read all the topic titles before pressing Post? what if they don't know what "flamed" is? i doubt ALL these people are just lazy, or see the Read This thread and just say screw it. hell I know if my mom tried using a forum she certainly wouldn't know to read that topic first. the point is, there's no reason to come off as dbags to newcomers even if they didn't read that 1 thread. this place is DEAD compared to any other forum I go to, and most of the people that regularly post are the ones that act so superior and sarcastic. this place shows up pretty high up on google when you search for dreadlocks too so low-visibility is not an excuse
It's Clearly Stated Using CAPITAL LETTERING, And Placed Directly Above The Last Reply Posted In This Thread.... In All Seriousness, Could It Be Made Any Simpler....*sigh*.....? Cheers Glen.
Look, if they want peace love and happiness, there are plenty of other forums to visit. Personally I prefer quality over quantity, and the regular posters here are quirky, funny, and dedicated dreadies and dread enthusiasts. If you lurk a bit it's quite easy to find a rhythm and fit in. It's almost 2012 - either learn to internet or settle down in some cyber backwater, I don't honestly care.
I'll start to say I'm sorry to be causing this total off-topic mudthrowing, but i hoped this was a forum of love Peace and happiness its afterall the only hippie-forum I found. I have been reading alot about dreads but everywhere i go they tell different stuff. I was just thinking if I told how my situration looked someone pro could tell me what would be best for me. I have a link I know its danish but here you see a girl making the dreads I call hippie dreads https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CSzkXXvNqL0&feature=youtube_gdata_player
You got it all wrong this is the hip-forum, not the hippie-forum, and as we all know its very hip to throw mud these days. To your question (wich I do not remember due to all the flaming) just do what the girl in the video does, or get a friend to help you. Why pay someone "professional" to do what you can do just as good yourself. She (that girl in the video) also have a great DIY turtorial in english, but dont follow her example on hairwashing...Its gross not washing your hair!
