im so into keller's guitar playing, but i cant figure out what he is doing to get that unmistakable sound. does anyone know? he is certainly VERY different in style than anyone i have ever heard. i just saw him live a few weeks ago and he looked like a total blur, i couldnt make out what he as doing really

the looping stuff doesnt really interest me. its amusing, but i think his real talent lies in simple guitar work

its mainly due to his right hand. he has an uncanny ability to pronounce the notes within the chords by playing fragments of the chord at a time. the speed in which he does it makes it almost sound like he's not playing chords at all and is what gives him such a full complex sound.

yea i was thinking along those lines. thats the way i like to play too. i wanna be the next keller! lol

but is he using a special guitar? like a 12 string maybe.

know any similar guitarists who you can recommend a listen to?

Yeah.. it's a 12 string... a Guild JF30-12... he takes the top octave E and the bottom octave E off for sharper harmonics and tunes down a full step.

I'm working at the same style... it's all rhythm. It isn't your fretting hand or your strumming/picking. It's both... and it's mostly speed and rhythm in unison... and lots of hammerons and pulloffs that takes a lot of strength to do at that speed.

By the way... Keller uses everything from six to 16 string guitars...

For an idea of it, listen to credit card song on my site. I'm still working at the sound.

i remember listening to your stuff a long time ago george, you're quite a musician.

and keller often does an upstroke - strumming the strings backwards, picking them out backward, etc. work from there and i think you'll start getting the feel.

Never noticed the upstroking so much before. The way I do it is with a metal dunlop thumbpick.
