I was just wondering if anyone had ever experienced sleep paralysis and how you reacted or what you thought was wrong with you the first time it happened. The first thought to pop into my head when it happened to me was "Meningitis"
i was proper freaked out but it was kinda cool at the same time. get it like 2/3 times a week, still scares me sometimes until i remember what's happening
I freaked too. I was in a bad dream state yet conscious of everything, right ? I couldn't move my body at all no matter how hard I tried. My response level was extremely slow or retarded. It felt as though weights were holding me down. I eventually woke from my dream. It does happen from time to time, very freaky to me.
it's happened to me multiple times, though it's not something that happens often. the very first time (went down when i was still in high school) i guess i panicked a little, but the thing didn't last too long (under a minute) so i didn't get to panic too much. i don't know what i thought, but i never thought something was wrong with me. i just assumed i woke up before my body did, which is sort of what it is. you wake up before the REM sleep is over, that's why you can't move. while it can be a little unnerving, especially if the paralysis goes on for too long, the thing itself is pretty cool. you sort of move your arm and nothing happens, but there's still some sensation associated with moving your arm there. it happens to me at odd times during my life. usually it's a short-lived thing, but a couple of times it's lasted long enough for me to get worried whether i'll ever be able to move again. overall, still a cool experience.
I've learned to induce sleep paralysis through meditation in my goal to astral project. And it is so .. cleansing, reliving. It's the most incredible feeling, you return to nature through your natural vibrations. After all, the whole universe, our consciencesness (s-?) is all just vibrations.
I have experienced sleep paralysis so often Ive started trying to figure out why/when/how...I realize it occurs during the lightest phase of REM ...when you're still in dream phase but very close to waking stage...its been going on for yrs and it still freaks me out...I tell myself I need to sit up to make it stop and my dream phase tells me I am sitting up but then it dawns on me I only dreamed I sat up and my body won't move at all...it'll keep happening until I finally pull out of it and I feel such relief when I can finally wake up.Often I try to call out so somebody can tell I'm stressin but can't make my mouth move. It IS really weird! Glad to hear it freaks other people out too.
interesting. but that's not exactly how it happens to me. there is no 'dream phase' involved in it for me at all. for all intents and purposes i am fully awake. but without the ability to move. i can't open my eyes or anything. when i move my arm for example the whole thing still retains some 'sensation' associated with movement without the actual movement itself taking place (in that there is not complete nothing happening when i try to move). in my mind i know i am doing it right but the arm won't move. that's the best way i can describe it. there's also a certain 'freerunning' effect to it. in that, i can do all these movements of my body in my mind, i can turn, roll, bend my knees, etc etc, without the actual movements themselves. it's neural commanding in its pure form. and the moment 'the body catches up' with my CNS is kind of cool as well. it's like something suddenly 'pops' and there it is, moving again.
Oh wow, thats scarier then my experiences...It makes me think of a Poe story and as so often happens, I can't think of the title at the moment, but the character has a fear of being buried alive because he has these spells of complete immobility and he knows he is alive but no one else can tell and eventually he does get entombed and is completely unable to move or speak...it is really scarey at times!!
It happened to me regularly when i was sitting with a particular meditation group. (Not while I was actually with the group, just around the same time) It only happened the mornings after I had sat with them, and I would feel an overwhelming terror. I couldnt move yet was totaly aware. It felt as though something was crushing my chest. I Panicked and started reciting The Lords Prayer in my head...(dont ask me why, I just did)..and as soon as I did the pressure went. Also known as "old Hag Syndrome" http://sleepparalysis.dnswh.com/what_is_sleep_paralysis.htm We toss and turn in our sleep all night long...why this sudden paralysis?
^There's theories that we have 7 different bodies. Of course are physical. Sleep paralysis of course happens near a stage of sleep-awake, so this state of consciousness is another body we are in, thus the lack of physical connection. Nothing to truly be worried about
lol. sleep paralysis is partly due to certain neurotransmitter secretion being inhibited in REM sleep. as a result motor neurons don't get stimulated and no movement is possible. that's probably not the whole story, but whatever the whole story is it definitely doesn't involve some 7 imaginary other bodies.
They work hand in hand. Scientifically speaking what you are mentioning is correct. These 7 bodies are part of many hindi/Buddhist beliefs, connected by the silver chord - referenced in many different cultures/texts, including the bible. Sleep paralysis is a stage before REM/sleep and Astral Projection, where if induced on purpose you can have on OBE in your etheric or Astral body. (Which we do naturally do every night, but have consciousness over it is another experience.)
I experienced it again recently. I heard a person come into my room and walk to the other side of the bed and stand beside me. I late figured out that I had experienced a false awakening and sleep paralysis at the same time
