Last week i ran into a guy with dreads and I said, hey, I like your dreads. But truthfully I didn't really. They are tiny as hell and it looks like he's one of those playdough things that you squeeze and playdough comes out and looks like hair or something. Too uniform. So we talked for a bit and he said he needed to get them touched up. So yesterday he came to my house and I was going to try to touch them up without using the stupid gel but I realized it was impossible. So I tried to explain to him that his hair is doing what is natural. He is mixed and had very Afro-like texture and has new growth that wasn't locked. I tried my hardest to explain to him about natural dreads and how it works, but he kept saying that his afro texture wouldn't dread. I couldn't tell him from experience but I swore it would. Does anyone have experience with dreading this type of textured hair? I ended up using the gel on him because he "needed" it done right then and there. My dreads were crying for his lol. We ended up counting them, about 130. I have maybe 50. It was ridiculous. Thought I'd share that. He made me want to pat myself on the back.
my friend "touches up" her boyfriends dreads.. backcombs & crochets the roots, at least once a month. she sees mine (she was the one who backcombed mine) and you can just tell she wants to wax and backcomb and crochet them..
i've heard of gelled dreads...I guess the theory is if they are 'glued' together, they will stay that way. yuck!! so sad for his dreads too.
I know people who do this.... I live in rather close proximity to someone who could have awesome locks, he's had them for a while (Long enough to have dead ends), he has afro hair, but he waxes them, and I don't know what else.... at least, I've seen wax things around. Some sort of bees wax, at least, I looked at the ingredients and it didn't look TOO bad or designed for consumerist whores, not sure it was even meant for locks in particular. But anyway, I know he palm rolls, waxes, and probably does other things. They don't look stiff or anything, but I'm quite convinced he could have amazing locks if he let them be. The topic has never come up between us, and I'm pretty sure it never will, I would feel very bad, he's worked so hard for his hair and I know he's proud But it's just too bad he doesn't believe his hair could lock on it's own. And he's probably also of the opinion that locks are only for black people.... which is awkward, given that his hair hasn't done any of it's own locking.
