Occupy Wall Street Targets Congress

The Middle Class will be joining Occupy Wall Street to Occupy Congress. What is happening to the average American in this country cannot continue.

I for one am glad to see OWS move its protest to the seat of power and change in Washington. If Americans cannot move Congress to pass a jobs bill, rebuild this country, and strengthen our schools, we will soon become a second rate country. Our equality disparity already places us low on the Gini Coefficient that is used by the CIA to track incomes and living standards around the world. Our numbers make us comparable to Cameroon, Madagascar, Rwanda, Uganda, and Ecuador. While countries like Canada, most of Europe, Australia, Japan, and Russia do not have the income gap we have.

So it is not some vague, mushy feeling that Americans have that tells them that something is seriously wrong with their country and their leaders. There is.

If you want to do something about it, come to Washington, DC. The larger the numbers in the protest, the more impressive the demand for change is, and not the kind of change that is a slogan but action. Make your Congress members feel your anger, your frustration, your outrage. You can’t march in Washington? Then call their offices or go to one of their town hall meetings when they’re home.

True, one person’s voice can be drowned out but not when 100,000 or more start to act. It happened with Dr. Martin Luther King when he moved the Civil Rights protest to Washington, when the Vietnam protestors thronged the Mall, and when the Women Rights Movement marched down Constitution Avenue just as the Suffragettes did before them.

It can happen again.

Washington (CNN) -- Protesters from the Occupy movement and other groups are planning to converge on Capitol Hill Tuesday to air their grievances in front of members of Congress.
Members of a broad range of organizations, including unions and community groups, are expected to travel to Washington to take part in an event dubbed "Take Back the People's House."
Many of the participants plan to assemble in the morning before marching toward the Capitol, according to information posted on the website of Progressive Maryland, a nonprofit organization that says it works to improve conditions for working families.
After arriving at the Capitol, marchers say they intend to fan out for meetings with representatives and "occupy" Congressional offices until closure. Not all participants have meetings scheduled, so some protests are expected in the area around the Capitol.

Joe Republican:

Joe gets up at 6 a.m. and fills his coffeepot with water to prepare his morning coffee. The water is clean and fresh because some tree-hugging liberal fought for minimum water-quality standards.
With his first swallow of coffee, he takes his daily medication. His medications are safe to take because some stupid commie liberal fought to insure their safety and that they work as advertised. All but $10 of his medications are paid for by his employer's medical plan because some liberal union workers fought their employers for paid medical insurance - now Joe gets it too.

He prepares his morning breakfast, bacon and eggs. Joe's bacon is safe to eat because some girlie-man liberal fought for laws to regulate the meat packing industry.

In the morning shower, Joe reaches for his shampoo. His bottle is properly labeled with each ingredient and its amount in the total contents because some crybaby liberal fought for his right to know what he was putting on his body and how much it contained.

Joe dresses, walks outside and takes a deep breath. The air he breathes is clean because some environmentalist wacko liberal fought for laws to stop industries from polluting our air.

He walks to the subway station for his government-subsidized ride to work. It saves him considerable money in parking and transportation fees because some fancy-pants liberal fought for affordable public transportation, which gives everyone the opportunity to be a contributor. Joe begins his work day. He has a good job with excellent pay, medical benefits, retirement, paid holidays and vacation because some lazy liberal union members fought and died for these working standards.

Joe's employer pays the same standards because Joe's employer doesn't want his employees to call the union. If Joe is hurt on the job or becomes unemployed, he'll get a worker compensation or unemployment check because some stupid liberal didn't think he should lose his home because of his temporary misfortune.
It is noon and Joe needs to make a bank deposit so he can pay some bills. Joe's deposit is federally insured by the FDIC because some godless liberal wanted to protect Joe's money from unscrupulous bankers who ruined the banking system before the Great Depression.

Joe has to pay his Fannie Mae-underwritten mortgage and his below- market federal student loan because some elitist liberal decided that Joe and the government would be better off if he was educated and earned more money over his lifetime.

Joe is home from work. He plans to visit his father this evening at his farm home in the country. He gets in his car for the drive. His car is among the safest in the world because some America-hating liberal fought for car safety standards. He arrives at his boyhood home. His was the third generation to live in the house financed by the Farmers Home Administration because bankers didn't want to make rural loans. The house didn't have electricity until some big- government liberal stuck his nose where it didn't belong and demanded rural electrification.
He is happy to see his father, who is now retired. His father has Medicare, lives on Social Security and a union pension because some wine- drinking, cheese-eating liberal made sure he could take care of himself so Joe wouldn't have to.
Joe gets back in his car for the ride home, and turns on a radio talk show. The radio host keeps saying that liberals are bad and conservatives are good. He doesn't mention that the beloved Republicans have fought against every protection and benefit Joe enjoys throughout his day. Joe agrees: "We don't need those big-government liberals ruining our lives! After all, I'm a self-made man who believes everyone should take care of themselves, just like I have."

That was a great comment. I was hoping someone would come out and explain to all these conservatives that by paying their taxes they improve the lives of everyone around them, including themselves. And without those taxes we would not have such a prosperous, safe and clean society where people like "Joe" can live out their lives in relative luxury.

I'm sick of conservatives feeling they are "entitled" to everything because they are "self-made". No one is "self-made". We all contribute to each other's well-being.

And liberals have ensured that Corporations don't fuck us up or the world we live in. But conservatives don't get it...

So happy about this move to target Congress and the lobbyists. I just hope they don't give up. I am lucky enough to have work right now, but not lucky enough to be able to afford a plane ticket to DC, otherwise I would most definitely find myself there for a few days.

(AP) – More than five dozen protesters upset about what they call corporate greed and the excessive influence of money in politics were arrested today after shutting down K Street in Washington. The mass demonstration snarled mid-day traffic in the nation's capital. The arrests came as demonstrators from across the country converged on K Street for a march that included participants from Occupy Wall Street encampments as well as other groups, including unions, sympathetic to their message.

Police had made 62 arrests by 5:30pm, said spokeswoman Gwendolyn Crump. Sixty-one of the arrests were for obstructing a public highway and an additional arrest was made for a misdemeanor assault on a police officer. About three dozen protesters were carried into police vans after lying down in the middle of a busy intersection and ignoring repeated orders to move. More protests are expected later this week, including a vigil for the jobless tomorrow.

(Reuters) - Demonstrators from the Occupy movement rallied outside the U.S. Capitol on Tuesday to protest against the influence of money on Congress.

In a sign of renewed vigor for the Occupy movement, which staged protests in many U.S. cities last fall, several hundred protesters gathered on the Capitol's West Front Lawn to greet members of Congress returning from a holiday break with a day of rallies and protests they said would include attempts to occupy lawmakers' offices.

Occupy protesters from around the country who gathered on the rain-soaked lawn carried signs saying, "Face it liberals, the Dems sold us out," "Congress for sale" and "Congress is not for sale."

"It's important to let people know we're not going to take it anymore. People are really mad about the way things are going and we want Congress to understand that," said protester James Cullen, a 30-year-old unemployed social worker from Greenbelt, Maryland.

I'm a Republican and I support the cause. I've taken a lot of flak from friends as a result of my support for the movement. One thing I have been critical of is "WHO" they're protesting as I've said from Day One that it should be "Occupy Capitol Hill" since it's the government who have written the laws that have allowed the rape of Americans by Wall Street....and they did it "legally" too.

‘Occupy Congress' Shuts Down White House with Smoke Bomb

An Occupy Congress movement shut down the White House for one hour late Tuesday night with a smoke bomb thrown over the Pennsylvania Avenue fence.

No one was injured, but White House personnel and reporters were prohibited from leaving the building for nearly an hour and then through a side entrance while security personnel investigated the incident. Robots were deployed to check for other devices.

President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle were outside the White House facility at the time and returned under tight guard as the investigation was under way.

No arrests were made, but further away from the White House, police took four people into custody after a scuffle near the Capitol.

An estimated 1,000 protesters had gathered on the main artery to demonstrate against corporate influence in the government. Rally organizers had secured a permit that allowed up to 10,000 people to attend the rally.

Just a thought....That what Roorshack posted. Maybe we should go to the original, print it out and mail it to all our local newspapers...People take a lot of shit for granted and a reminder of what they are taking for granted and who was behind getting it for them would make a difference...Just a thought..It was a good post
