i keep getting these emails from people who are christian about how mad they are when someone says happy holidays to them instead of merry christmas. i'm an atheist, so obviously, i always say happy holidays, but doesn't it seem like a nicer thing to say to include everybody? i mean, some people don't have the same religion as you, but they don't get mad when you say happy holidays. why are christians so uptight about that stuff? also, i'm pretty sure it's only american christians who act like this.
Throw them a curve ball...... Wish them a "Blessed Yule" That's the holiday the christians stole anyways......
^^^ that will teach them! I tend to use Seasons Greetings or Happy Holidays if I do not know the people well or if it is a business situation. The rest of the time I use Merry Christmas.
i say merry christmas because it's usually in a response. "merry chrsitmas to you," "oh merry christmas to you too!" But i prefer happy holidays because it encompasses a broader spectrum of people and holidays. it's more PC i was raised in a multi-religious household too, so perhaps i'm a bit partial. to be offended by happy holidays though, that is a bit SAD
It really is sad... people are so crazy sometimes. I am not really sure what I say to be honest, I don't think I usually say anything to people I don't know. I wish my family a Merry Christmas because they are Catholic, but I know that they are not offended by anyone saying "Happy Holidays".
If I'm on the receiving end of holiday salutations then I just say "Thanks. You too!" When I give holiday salutations I say "Enjoy your holidays!".
I only say Merry Christmas on Christmas (or Christmas Eve, because we're closed on Christmas, so I have to wish all my customers a happy day early), they're getting their panties all wadded up because people want to encompass ALL the winter holidays in their well-wishing. Christmas isn't the only holiday in the cold months and Christians tend to forget (blindly ignore with fingers in their ears) that.
Catholics are usually pretty reasonable. When you start getting into your babtists you can only hope you're talking to someone who wears shoes.
To each their own meThinks For me it's Yule, to others, their dates have greater significance - although it does seem to me that any date is a date; if it can, it will be in taken over by the C word .... Commercialism Blessed be to all - "May your God go with you"
You mean THE STORES stole it! Christmas is nothing but a spam event, people wanting to sell thier garbage....
what christians stole from pagans and capitolists stole from christians is no more nor less then the winter solstice, that no one can steal from anyone. so hug and bring peace to one and all. just stop trying to force one chauvinistic perspective on everyone else. doing that will go a lot further for bringing peace then all the rest of it. snow hiding the garbage on the ground and the smell of pine needles are also a wonderful part of it too.
I don't know...... Never saw a store having a Yule sale....... Apparently you missed the point of what I said.
Apparently Rhode Island has banned the saying "Merry Christmas" I wanna go to Rhode Island with a megaphone and wish everyone a Merry Christmas. It depends on the timing as to what I'll say to people...sometimes I'll say "Happy Holidays" or "Have a great holiday" to generalize Christmas/New Years. Other times I'll say Merry Christmas if its near Christmas.
seriously?? how can a state ban a phrase? doesn't that violate the first amendment? seems like people would be freaking out about that all over the news...
