If they can pull this off- and not pull some BS trickery and open another money spigot elsewhere then this would be a major accomplishment. Of course following through by paying attention to what congress does would be nice too. the money pigs will either stall it in congress. I think unions should not be allowed to contribute to campaigns. JMO At such a time that the amendment is passed, watch numerous non profit wings of big corporations magically spring up in an effort to ensure it remains business as usual. Ultimately people need to collectively enable all to be able to disengage from the economy which is a tool of subjugation.
Once this is passed (and I think eventually this will be passed, although it may be a long fight) its going to become something that absolutely befuddles the mind when one remembers that corporate campaign contributions were once allowed. I don't think this will happen until society is literally unable to sustain the current economy. We're already on that path but its really just the beginning. People will not give up their stock market, their cars, their cheap goods from China until the day when it is not a choice.
Unfortunately, ^^^This^^^ Although if worded correctly this could and should be outlawed at the same time. Hope this passes, it's a step in the right direction.
Indeed. Putting that power back in the hands of congress doesn't get it out from under influence and corruption, but at least there's a little more accountability. Thanks for the post Aerianne.
This is one of their positions that I actually agree with, and I don't think it goes far enough. All private money should be banned from politics. Campaigns for public office should be done entirely with public money, and all private donations should be punished for bribery.
You know, if one steps back a little, while I understand your sentiment I'm not sure that we all want to pay tax dollars to support campaigns, as they operate now. For sure, corporate money has to stop. But at what point should I be disallowed to support a candidate that I agree with and want to see elected? Campaigns have become much much much too expensive and in order to be viable they have to spend millions. Perhaps something like.. in order to renew their FCC licenses, media outlets have to give X amount of airtime to each candidate. A few things like that, and limiting the huge amounts of money needed in some sort of fair way, and severely restricting lobbying might be a start.
Time Penalties for campaign ad's deemed even the slightest bit offensive, putting them in the hole 10% at a time for slandarous activities. Just a short slot in which time the candidate is to outline the bullet points of his campaign, outline his intentions, not fillour ears with his 2 cents on the last guy who did the job or about other jobs the opponent held. I do think there needs to be a nonpartisan group who's sole duty is to dish out all relevant points of interest on a candidates background, allowing the public full disclosure of a 10 year background check & credit report. (Hey if we have to do it for them when we want a Government job, it's only fair we demand the same of those we place in the position right?)
this is part of the problem. It doesn't take millions of dollars to express a platform on various issues. It takes millions of dollars to produce slick tv ads that doesn't let you know anything about the candidate except the fact that he/she is a slanderous asshole. I don't think all private campaign financing should be banned, but I do think there needs to be a cap on how much can be donated by each individual (corporations should be banned from campaign contributions for sure) and a cap on the overall amount of private funds a candidate is allowed to raise. If a candidate can't make their platform known with limited funds, then they're obviously trying to run a campaign based on tricks and deception.
