I used to be skeptical until I read about an old army colonel who was approached by a lot of the major corporations at the time to stage a coup. That was over half a century ago, and I'm sure said corporations got their way in less history book accountable ways.
Yes, during the Great Depression, big business did not like how the government was being run, and intended to take it for themselves. But instead of a bloody war, they bought that government. The businessmen had money to pay for this army, our government did not. But the two sides came to an agreement, thus why things like the Federal Reserve exist.
