EDIT: TO give info on cinco de mayo. cinco de mayo is a celebration of mexicans defeating the french in the mexican region state of puebla and now celebrated also across usa as a celebration of mexican heritage http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinco_de_Mayo
I can't follow the link now. But I expect it was using the standard "in the principals opinion, if it could/will cause a signifigant disturbance, free whatevers can be censored" handbook clause. No, if they just wore shirts, that should obviously be fine, but if they did it in the racist/loud douchebaggy way that I expect they did it (even if that's now what the article says) then they deserved it, or at least to be isolated for the school day.
Well the school district did not agree with the principals decision and said there is nothing wrong with wearing a american flag t shirt.
I'm sorry.... no flash player either. I won't be able to watch/read anything not pasted in as text or a picture until monday, when i get back to my normal computer.
A couple of years ago, there was rumour that the 'England' flag would be banned from display on St. George's (Patron Saint) Day, 'because it may offend'. This was led not by the communities that it was thought that would be, but by a minority of bureaucrats, who (laughingly) thought it would upset them. There is an Asian community in Manchester close to the large student area, and as I drove to work in the week of the date, along an area affectionately called “the Curry mile” (comprising of cafés, restaurants and shops) I was hearted to see the place awash with St. Georges flags. They clearly don't know Manchester – needless to say, the party went on, even more so when this 'idea' was proposed! It’s all about tolerance and not fear of expression
Haaa.... I can't wait to be a public school parent.... Have a while to wait though, seems like I'll be the teacher until high school. Anyways, I'm waiting for the whole "learning is a cooperative thing between the school and parent, where the school harasses your kids and harasses you to help...." speech. School administration tends to be those who couldn't shove around adults, but desperately wanted a job where they could shove around SOMEONE.
This is usa not mexico and people of this country should be allowed to wear their country flag. I see mexicans wear their mexican flag t-shirts to school all the time in america. if a mexican wore a mexican flag t-shirt on 4th of july to the fireworks at the park I would not care or be offended i'd probably just laugh plus one of those kids wearing a american flag t-shirt is half white half mexican. yet other mexicans are still offended? I just think this is hilarious the reason I posted because of how funny this is.
I thought they looked like typical douchebags.. And that flag is just a symbol of corporate america now, sort of always has been.
I remember that. During the World Cup, our right-wing rag 'The Sun' did an article on how the St Georges cross would be banned in areas of England for offending the immigrants - 'The Suns' usual target for bullying. It was all bollocks of course and no council had banned it at all!. I flew a St.George flag with pride and a slight sense of fear as I live in Scotland!.
