A lot of time from wear, tear and flexing the soldering inside the USB drive can break, usually near the connector. Most computers make an audible sound when you insert a USB device even if the drivers do not work. If there is no sound, no lights, no activity then there is probably a broken contact inside the stick. If you've got important data you might want to have a repair shop look at it and see if they can re-solder/test the contacts and internal traces. Some shops may even do surface mount rework, meaning they could take the flash chip off the stick and dump the memory with professional equipment. You can probably find online services that do this also but it's likely to cost some bucks.

There's a lot of file recovery programs. before trying a recovery I would see if I can get a raw dump of the entire flash. Find a prog with this option, I think a prog called usbdrive does this, it's been awhile. Once you have a complete image of the flash backed up then try file recovery apps.

Have you tried other USB slots? If it still doesn't work, try the USB on another computer. If it works, something might be wrong with the USB slot on the first computer. If it doesn't work on the second computer, the USB might be damaged or too corrupted.

Flash memory has limited read/write cycles and can become exhausted.
if its an el cheapo drive, even faster failure rate.
